The International Animated Film Society, ASIFA-Hollywood, has announced the nominees for its 47th Annual Annie Awards. Trigger and XFlag’s Promare, DLE and Madhouse’s Okko’s Inn, and Makoto Shinkai’s Weathering With You anime films received nominations in the Best Animated Independent Feature category. The other nominees in the category are Buñuel in the Labyrinth of the Turtles and I Lost My Body.
ASIFA-Hollywood added the Best Animated Independent Feature award for the 2016 awards in order to “recognize not only features in wide release, but also the independent animators, international studios, anime and special productions that might not otherwise get the attention they deserve.”
The Annie Awards recognize outstanding achievement in animation. The awards ceremony will be held on January 25, 2020.
The Laemmle Theater’s Monica Film Center in Santa Monica, California will begin screening Makoto Shinkai’s Weathering With You film on November 29, 2019. According to the theater’s website, the film will screen there until December 5, 2019.
All films submitted for the Animated Feature Film category for the 92nd Academy Awards must have a seven-day run in a Los Angeles County theater to qualify for consideration. The film is being submitted both for consideration for the Animated Feature Film category and the Best International Feature Film category.
Fathom Events will screen the film in theaters in the United States on January 15 and 16, 2020. The screenings will be a “Special Fan Preview” with exclusive bonus content before GKIDS opens the film in North America on January 17, 2020. The screenings starting on January 17, 2020 will have both English-subtitled screenings and English-dub screenings.
Vertical has announced that it has licensed Wataru Kubota’s manga adaptation of Makoto Shinkai’s anime film Weathering With You (Tenki no Ko). The company will release the manga in Summer 2020.
The manga launched in the September 2019 issue of Kodansha’s Afternoon magazine on July 25, 2019. Kodansha released the first compiled book volume on November 22, 2019.
Fathom Events has announced that it will screen Makoto Shinkai’s Weathering With You film in theaters in the United States on January 15 and 16, 2020. The screenings will be a “Special Fan Preview” with exclusive bonus content before GKIDS opens the film in North America on January 17, 2020. Tickets for Fathom Events’ screening will go on sale on November 15, 2019.
Weathering With You opened in 359 theaters and 448 screens in Japan on July 19, 2019. The film sold 1,159,020 tickets for 1,643,809,400 yen (about US$15.22 million) in its first three days in 358 theaters. The film ranked #1 in its opening weekend. The film has sold a total of 10.27 million tickets to earn 13,738,922,000 yen (about US$126 million) as of October 20, 2019. Weathering With You is now the #7 highest-earning domestic film of all time in Japan and the highest-grossing film in Japan this year.
Makoto Shinkai’s Weathering With You (Tenki no Ko) film won the Audience Award along with Zabou Breitman and Elea Gobbe-Mevellec’s The Swallows of Kabul film at the Animation Is Film Festival in Los Angeles. The film’s screening at the festival on October 18, 2019 was the film’s United States premiere, with director Shinkai and producer Genki Kawamura appearing in person.
The festival also hosted the North American premiere of the Children of the Sea film, the West Coast premiere of the Ride Your Wave film, and a screening of the Cencoroll Connect anime. Aside from Weathering With You, Children of the Sea and Ride Your Wave screened in competition. Children of the Sea director Ayumu Watanabe also attended the festival.
The organizers of the 13th Asia Pacific Screen Awards (ASPA) have announced nominations for its Best Animated Feature Film category. Makoto Shinkai’s Weathering With You film and Hiroyasu Ishida’s Penguin Highway film are both nominated for the award. The two films will compete against Kirby Atkins’ Mosley, Oh Sung-yoon’s Underdog, and Behzad Nalbandi’s The Unseen films.
The awards will be announced in Brisbane, Australia on November 21, 2019. Weathering With You and Penguin Highway will screen for free in the city on November 16 and 17, 2019.
Anime NYC has announced that GKIDS will screen Makoto Shinkai’s new film Weathering With You (Tenki no Ko) as the closing film of the convention. The screening will be the film’s East Coast premiere.
The film will open in North America on January 17, 2020. Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) hosted the North American premiere of Weathering With You as part of its Special Presentations category, with screenings on September 8, 10, and 14, 2019. Japan submitted the film for consideration in the Best International Feature Film category at the 92nd Academy Awards. The film will also screen at the Hawai’i International Film Festival (HIFF) on November 17, 2019.
Anime NYC will be held at the Javits Center in Midtown Manhattan from November 15-17, 2019.
