Vertical Announces Forthcoming Releases

Kodansha Comics announced at its New York Comic Con Metaverse panel that its Vertical imprint has licensed Suzuka Oda’s Pretty Boy Detective Club (Bishōnen Tanteidan) manga series based NisiOisin and Kinako’s Bishōnen Series novels. The company will release the manga in two-in-one omnibus editions starting in Summer 2021.

The publisher also announced that Vertical will release the Monogatari Series Final Season box set in Summer 2021. The box set will feature exclusive art by VOFAN, and it will include the following seven novels:

  • Tsukimonogatari (Possession Tale)
  • Koyomimonogatari Part 1 (Calendar Tale)
  • Koyomimonogatari Part 2
  • Owarimonogatari Part 1 (End Tale)
  • Owarimonogatari Part 2
  • Owarimonogatari Part 3
  • Zoku Owarimonogatari (End Tale Cont…)

Kodansha Comics to Release the A Sign of Affection Manga in Print, and Vertical Will Release the Blood on the Tracks Manga Digitally

Kodansha USA Publishing, which handles the Kodansha Comics and Vertical imprints, announced during its Anime Expo Lite panel that Suu Morishita’s A Sign of Affection manga will get a print release in March 2021. In addition, Vertical will release Shūzō Oshimi’s Blood on the Tracks (Chi no Wadachi) manga digitally starting in August 2021. The company will premiere the second volume digitally ahead of the print release.

Kodansha Comics launched the A Sign of Affection manga digitally on March 31, 2020, and it is getting a simulpub on Comixology, Crunchyroll, and BookWalker.

Vertical released the Blood on the Tracks manga’s first volume in print on February 25, 2020.

Kodansha Comics and Vertical Announce New Manga Licenses

Kodansha Comics and Vertical announced new manga licenses and releases during the Kodansha Live presentation.

Kodansha Comics’ new licenses include:

Title: Summer of You (Kimi to Natsu no Naka)
Creator: Nagisa Furuya
Debut: Spring 2021 (print/digital)
Synopsis: Chiharu Saeki and and Wataru Toda are two high school students who share a common hobby: They love to watch movies. After they meet, they become fast friends, until one day, when Chiharu confesses his love for Wataru. Wataru says that Chiharu’s confession doesn’t bother him, and the boys continue throughout their summer, going to pilgrimages to see film spots from their favorite movies. But the more time he spends with Chiharu, Wataru realizes he may not only be as unaffected by Chiharu’s confession as he claimed to be, but those feels may also be mutual.

Title: Chasing After Aoi Koshiba (Kyō, Koshiba Aoi ni Aetara.)

Vertical and Kodansha Advanced Media Consolidate Under Kodansha Comics

Publishing news magazine and website Publishers Weekly has reported that Kodansha USA Publishing, the company that handles the Kodansha Comics label, will consolidate manga publisher Vertical and digital distribution company Kodansha Advanced Media under its management. As part of the restructuring, Kodansha Advanced Media general manager Alvin Lu is now the CEO and president of Kodansha USA Publishing.

Takashi Sakuda is now chief operating officer of Kodansha USA Publishing, and Kiichiro Sugawara has been named publisher. Ivan Salazar, who was a former PR and events specialist under Comixology, is the new senior marketing editor for Kodansha USA Publishing.

Japanese publisher Kodansha founded its New York-based subsidiary Kodansha USA Publishing in 2008, and Kodansha and Dai Nippon Printing acquired a controlling stake in Vertical in 2011.
