The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the list of 25 films that have been submitted for consideration in the Animated Feature Film category for the 91st Academy Awards. A maximum of five films from the list will receive the nomination.
Eight anime films are included in the list:
- Naoko Yamada and Kyoto Animation’s Liz and the Blue Bird
- Nobuyuki Takeuchi, Akiyuki Simbo, and SHAFT’s Fireworks
- Masaaki Yuasa and Science SARU’s Lu over the wall and Night is Short, Walk On Girl
- Isamu Imakake and HS Pictures Studio’s The Laws of the Universe: Part 1
- Studio 4°C and Ankama’s MFKZ
- Mari Okada and P.A. Works’ Maquia – When the Promised Flower Blooms
- Mamoru Hosoda and Studio Chizu’s Mirai
The Academy will reveal the nominations on January 22, 2019. The 91st annual Academy Awards will be held on February 24, 2019.
GKIDS and Shout! Factory have announced that they will release Masaaki Yuasa’s The Night is Short Walk On, Girl anime film on a Blu-ray Disc and DVD combo pack on January 29, 2019. The release will include an interview with Yuasa.
Fathom Events and GKIDS screened the film from August 21-22, 2018, and GKIDS kept the film screening after August 22, 2018. All screenings were in Japanese with English subtitles. The film earned more than US$350,979 at the U.S. box office.
The film, which adapts Tomihiko Morimi’s novel of the same name, opened in Japan in April 2017.
The Japan Film Festival of San Francisco has announced its film lineup The festival will screen the following anime films:
- Liz and the Blue Bird
- A Silent Voice
- The Night is Short, Walk on Girl
- Flavors of Youth
The festival will run from September 28-October 7, 2018 at the NEW PEOPLE Cinema.
Box Office Mojo is reporting that The Night is Short Walk On, Girl anime film grossed US$350,979 at the U.S. box office from August 21-26, 2018. The film was open in 415 theaters at its widest release.

The film opened in Japan in April 2017. It won the Grand Prize for Features award at the Ottawa International Film Festival in September 2017 and the Animation of the Year award at the 41st annual Japan Academy Prizes in March 2018.
The organizers of the Los Angeles Anime Film Festival (LA-AFF) have announced that this year’s event will take place from from September 21-23, 2018 at Regal L.A. Live: A Barco Innovation Center. The staff also unveiled the festival’s film lineup, which includes three North American premieres: Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions! the Movie: Take on Me, Shōnen Hollywood: Holly Stage for You Complete Edition, and King of Prism: PRIDE the HERO.
Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions! the Movie: Take on Me (Eiga Chūnibyō demo Koi ga Shitai! Take On Me) will screen on opening night.
Shōnen Hollywood creator Ikuyo Hashiguchi will attend the festival for a Q&A session.

Fathom Events and GKIDS have announced that Masaaki Yuasa’s The Night is Short, Walk On Girl anime film will screen in United States theaters on Tuesday, August 21, 2018 and Wednesday, August 22, 2018. Tickets are available on GKIDS’ website.
GKIDS will also host a limited theatrical release independent of Fathom Events starting on August 22, 2018. All screenings will be in Japanese with English subtitles.
The Night is Short, Walk On Girl opened in Japanese theaters in April 2017.
Masaaki Yuasa’s Night is Short, Walk On Girl anime film won the Animation of the Year award at the 41st annual Japan Academy Prizes. The film was competing against Fireworks, Should We See it from the Side or the Bottom?, Napping Princess, Mary and The Witch’s Flower, and Detective Conan: The Crimson Love Letter.
The Nippon Academy-Sho Association, a Japanese group roughly comparable to America’s Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of Oscars fame, presents the Japan Academy Prizes every year. The nominees all receive “Awards of Excellence,” but the actual top award in each category was presented in a ceremony on March 2, 2018 at the Grand Prince Hotel New Takanawa in Tokyo.
Movies are eligible if they opened in Japan between December 16, 2016, and December 15, 2017.
