New York Times Announces New Graphic Novels Bestseller List

The New York Times has announced that it will begin publishing several new bestseller lists, including a new combined monthly bestseller list for Graphic Books. The list will include fiction, nonfiction, children’s, adults, and manga. The newspaper stated that the lists are returning due to continued reader interest and market strength. The monthly list will begin publishing online on October 2, 2019 and in print on October 20, 2019.

Pamela Paul, editor of the Book Review, stated that the new monthly graphic books list “combines the format as it exists across all platforms — hardcover, paperback and digital — in order to represent the range of ways in which publishers create.”

The New York Times began publishing its graphic book best seller lists in March 2009. The newspaper stopped publishing weekly bestseller lists for its three graphic book categories in February 2017. The categories included hardcover graphic books, softcover graphic books, and manga. The newspaper had been compiling the lists from “hundreds of independent book retailers (statistically weighted to represent all such outlets); national, regional and local chains; online and multimedia entertainment retailers; university, gift, supermarket, discount department stores and newsstands” as well as “unit sales reported by retailers nationwide that specialize in graphic novels and comic books.”
