19 Manga Rank on Young Adult Library Services Association’s 2019 List of Graphic Novels for Teens

The American Library Association’s (ALA’s) Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) has released its 2019 list of Great Graphic Novels for Teens. Gengoroh Tagame’s My Brother’s Husband and Hiromu Arakawa’s Silver Spoon ranked in the Top Ten graphic novels this year.

The 19 manga included on the list are:

Harvey Awards Creates New “Best Manga” Category

The Harvey Awards, which honors outstanding work in comics and sequential art, has announced its list of nominations for this year’s awards.

This year’s awards include a new “Best Manga” category, along with five other new categories. The first nominees for “Best Manga” include:

  • My Brother’s Husband by Gengoroh Tagame
  • My Hero Academia by Kōhei Horikoshi
  • My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness by Kabi Nagata
  • Tokyo Ghoul by Sui Ishida
  • your name. by Makoto Shinkai and Ranmaru Kotone

In previous years, manga were nominated alongside other comics in the “Best American Edition of Foreign Material” category. “Best American Edition of Foreign Material” is no longer a category, though there is also a new category for “Best European Book.”

The Harvey Awards will be held in conjunction with New York Comic Con on October 5, 2018.

Gengoroh Tagame’s My Brother’s Husband Manga Wins Eisner Award

The 2018 Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards revealed its winners at San Diego Comic-Con on July 20, 2018.

Gengoroh Tagame’s My Brother’s Husband manga won this year’s Best U.S. Edition of International Material—Asia award. The manga competed against Jiro Taniguchi’s Furari, Satoru Noda’s Golden Kamuy, Moto Hagio’s Otherworld Barbara, and Junji Ito’s Shiver: Junji Ito Selected Stories.

Kodansha Comics’ 35th anniversary edition of Katsuhiro Otomo’s Akira manga won the Best Archival Collection/Project—Comic Books award as well as the Best Publication Design award. Haruko Hashimoto, Ajani Oloye, and Lauren Scanlan edited the complete hardcover box set, and Phil Balsman, Akira Saito, Norma Editorial, and MASH•ROOM provided designs.

Manga Nominated for Eisner Awards

The 2018 Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards panel of judges has announced its nominees for the best works in the comic book industry.

Nominees include:

Manga artist Jiro Taniguchi received a nomination for Best Writer/Artist for Furari and Louis Vuitton Travel Guide: Venice, both published by Fanfare / Ponent Mon. Taniguchi, who passed away in 2017, is also known for The Times of Botchan, Kodoku no Gourmet, The Summit of the Gods, and A Distant Neighborhood, among other titles.

Dark Horse Comics’ release of Gou Tanabe’s H.P. Lovecraft’s The Hound and Other Stories, translated by Zack Davisson, received a nomination in the Best Adaptation from Another Medium category along with three other titles.

Manga Included in Amazon’s Best Graphic Novels of 2017 List

Amazon announced its Best Books of 2017 list, including a list of 20 books in the “Comics & Graphic Novels” category.

The following manga appeared in the unranked “Comics & Graphic Novels” list:

My Brother’s Husband Manga to End in May 2017

The June 2017 issue of Futabasha’s Monthly Action magazine is revealing that Gengoroh Tagame is ending his My Brother’s Husband (Otōto no Otto) manga in the magazine’s next issue on May 25, 2017. The chapter will have a color opening page.

Tagame began serializing the manga in Monthly Action in November 2014. Futabasha published the manga’s third compiled volume in October 2016.

Pantheon Books is releasing the manga in two-in-one omnibus volumes, and the first volume will ship in June 2017.
