VIZ Media Announces the Broadcast Debut of Megalobox on Toonami

VIZ Media announces the North American broadcast debut of the boxing series, MEGALOBOX, on Adult Swim’s Toonami.

The first episode of the sports action drama premieres on Saturday, December 8, 2018 at 12 a.m. EST/PST, with future episodes scheduled to air each Saturday. Toonami is the anime programming block on Adult Swim, which offers a variety of original and acquired animated and live-action series for young adults.

The protagonist of the series is a young man with no origin and known only by his ring name: “JNK.DOG.” He survives by fighting in rigged, underground matches of a sport called MEGALOBOX, a form of fighting utilizing powered exoskeletons. JD is bored, resigned and unfulfilled—until the day he encounters Yuri, the reigning official champion of MEGALOBOX.

The English dub cast for MEGALOBOX features Kaiji Tang (as Joe), Jason Marnocha (as Coach Nanbu), Erica Mendez (as Sachio), Lex Lang (as Yuri) and Erika Harlacher (as Yukiko).

VIZ Media’s Announcements at New York Comic Con

VIZ Media announced the following at New York Comic Con:

  • Megalobox will debut on Adult Swim’s Toonami block on Saturday, December 8, 2018 with an English dub.
  • The company has licensed Mika Yamamori’s Daytime Shooting Star (Hirunaka no Ryūsei) manga, and plans to release the first volume in Summer 2019.
  • VIZ Media also announced plans to release The Art of Neon Genesis Evangelion: 2007-2017 art book in Summer 2019. The book features movie art, concept art, collaborations with mobile video games, and fashion spreads.

LA Femme Film Festival to Showcase the Megalobox Anime Series on October 12, 2018 at the Regal Cinemas L.A. Live 14

LA Femme Film Festival will host a female-centric anime event at the 14th Annual LA Femme International Film Festival on Friday, October 12, 2018 at 4:00 p.m. at the Regal Cinema at LA Live. The segment will feature episodes of the popular anime series Megalobox. There will be a Q&A panel following the screening with series producer Minako Fujiyoshi, moderated by writer Joelle Sellner. Admission is free of charge and reservations can be made at rsvplafemmefilmfestival@gmail.com.

Megalobox (13 x 30 minute episodes) began from the enthusiasm throughout the world for the celebration of Tomorrow’s Joe‘s 50th anniversary. Megalobox will have a new type of retro-anime style that will begin a trend that states: what is old is new again. As a reboot of the iconic anime series Tomorrow’s Joe, the show is a futuristic boxing drama that appeals to a broad age range. The younger crowd enjoys the cool retro art style and the older crowd reminisces about the classics. The dramatic animation and contemporary hip-hop music have added dimension to the series and drawn in audiences.

Minako Fujiyoshi debuted as the producer with the Megalobox project. Her previous experience involved working within the TMS production division, and she has worked on numerous titles such as Hamtaro, the Anpanman movies, Lupin the Third: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine, and Sweetness and Lightning.

Joelle Sellner has written for animated shows including Sonic Boom, Ben 10: Omniverse, Teen Titans, and Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Her animated web series work includes DC Superhero Girls, and Mattel’s Monster High. Joelle has also written comics for DC, Marvel, Dynamite, Blizzard and IDW, as well as Lion Forge/Roar Comics including Saved by the Bell and Punky Brewster.

Leslie LaPage from LA Femme states: “We are thrilled to be able to screen and have such wonderful female animation creators Minako Fujiyoshi and Joelle Sellner. Women have long been appreciated more in Animation overseas then on the domestic coast but the overall advancement of women in animation is starting to be seen worldwide with a rippling effect in the US.”

Megalobox Manga Ends

The September 2018 issue of Kodansha’s Shonen Magazine Edge magazine has published the last chapter of Chikara Sakuma’s Megalobox – Shukumei no Sōken (Megalobox – The Twin Fists of Fate) manga.

The manga is based on Megalobox, the spin-off television anime based on Ikki Kajiwara (pen name Asao Takamori) and Tetsuya Chiba’s Ashita no Joe manga.

Sakuma launched the manga in Shonen Magazine Edge on February 17, 2018. Kodansha published the manga’s first compiled book volume on April 17, 2018.

VIZ Media Acquires the Futuristic Boxing Action Series Megalobox

VIZ Media thrilled fans during its official panel held at Anime Expo as it announced the acquisition of the Megalobox anime series.

Megalobox reboots the manga published by Kodansha, Tomorrow’s Joe, the story of an orphan who becomes a champion boxer that marks its 50th Anniversary this year. VIZ Media acquired the exclusive theatrical, broadcast, home media, and non-exclusive streaming, merchandise and consumer products rights to Megalobox from TMS Entertainment Co., Ltd., one of the world’s largest and most distinguished animation studios.

A variety of renowned anime industry veterans make up Megalobox’s staff, including Director and Conceptual Design by Yo Moriyama and Series Composition and Screenplay by Katsuhiko Manabe.
