GKIDS Licenses Lu over the wall and Night is Short, Walk on Girl

GKIDS has announced that it has acquired the North American distribution rights for Masaaki Yuasa’s Night is Short, Walk On Girl and Lu over the wall anime films. The company also reaffirmed its distribution of Yuasa’s Mind Game anime film. In addition, it announced that the screening of Lu over the wall at Utah’s Sundance Film Festival (January 18-28, 2018) will feature an English dub.

Lu over the wall opened in Japan in May 2017, and won the top “Cristal for a Feature Film” award at the Annecy International Film Festival in June 2017. The film also won the Silver Prize for the “Best Animated Feature Film” audience award at Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival in August 2017.

Night is Short, Walk On Girl opened in Japan in April 2017. The film won the Grand Prize for Features award at the Ottawa International Film Festival in September 2017, where it screened in competition alongside Lu over the wall.

Lu Over the Wall Anime Film to Screen at the Sundance Film Festival

The Sundance Institute has announced that Masaaki Yuasa and Science SARU’s Lu over the wall anime film will screen at the Sundance Film Festival, which is being held from January 18-28, 2018. The Utah festival will screen the film in its Kids section.

Lu over the wall opened in Japan on May 19, 2017, and won the top “Cristal for a Feature Film” award at the Annecy International Film Festival in June 2017. The film also won the Silver Prize for the “Best Animated Feature Film” audience award at Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival in August 2017.

Animation is Film Festival Announces Films Competing in the Festival

The inaugural “Animation is Film” festival has announced its full competition film lineup. Newly announced films screening in competition include SHAFT and Nobuyuki Takeuchi’s Fireworks, Should We See it from the Side or the Bottom?, Studio 4°C and Guillaume “Run” Renard’s Mutafukaz, and Science SARU and Masaaki Yuasa’s Night is Short, Walk On Girl. The event will also hold a special screening of Masaaki Yuasa’s Mind Game.

The festival previously announced that Masaaki Yuasa and Science SARU’s Lu over the wall anime film and Studio Ponoc and Hiromasa Yonebayashi’s Mary and the Witch’s Flower anime film will screen in competition. The screening will mark the North American premiere of Mary and the Witch’s Flower.

The inaugural festival will be taking place from October 20-22, 2017 at the TCL Chinese 6 Theater in Hollywood, California. The event will host 20 programs, including feature films in competition, special presentations, retrospectives, and short film programs. The festival will feature both juried and audience awards.

The films screening in competition include Masaaki Yuasa and Science SARU’s Lu over the wall anime film and Studio Ponoc and Hiromasa Yonebayashi’s Mary and The Witch’s Flower anime film. The screening will mark the North American premiere of Mary and The Witch’s Flower.

The Animation is Film festival will announce the full lineup on September 20, 2017. Tickets will also go on sale on the same day.

“Cocolors” Anime Short Wins Satoshi Kon Award at Fantasia International Film Festival

Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival has revealed its winners for this year’s festival. Toshihisa Yokoshima’s “Cocolors” short film won the “Axis: The Satoshi Kon Award for Excellence in Animation” award for a short film. The “Cocolors” short is the second installment in Kamikaze Douga’s Gasoline Mask/em> project.

Takahide Hori’s “Junk Head” stop-motion film earned a Special Mention in the Satoshi Kon Award for a feature film.

Additionally, Kenji Kamiyama’s Napping Princess (Ancien and the Magic Tablet) anime film won the Gold Prize for the “Best Animated Feature Film” audience award. Masaaki Yuasa’s Lu over the wall anime film won the Silver Prize in same category, and his Night is Short, Walk On Girl anime film won the Bronze Prize in the same category.

AnimeFest to Screen the Ancien and the Magic Tablet, Lu over the wall, and The Night is Short Walk On, Girl Anime Films

AnimeFest has announced that it will screen Signal.MD’s Ancien and the Magic Tablet anime film, as well as Science SARU’s Lu over the wall and The Night is Short Walk On, Girl anime films.

Signal.MD staff members, including writer and director Kenji Kamiyama, animation director Motonobu Hori, mechanical designer Shigeto Koyama, creature designer Christophe Ferreira, and producer Yoshiki Sakurai are attending the convention. They will give an introduction to the film before the screening.

Science SARU staff, including director Masaaki Yuasa and producer Eunyoung Choi, are also attending the convention.

Ancien and the Magic Tablet opened in Japan on March 18, 2017 in 232 theaters nationwide, and ranked #9 in the Japanese box office in its opening weekend. The film will screen in 40 countries and regions worldwide. GKIDS has licensed the film for the United States.

Lu over the wall and Night is Short, Walk On Girl Films to Compete at Ottawa International Animation Fest

The Ottawa International Animation Festival has announced its partial lineup for works that will screen in competition at this year’s festival. Both of Masaaki Yuasa’s recent anime films, Lu over the wall (Yoake Tsugeru Lu no Uta) and Night is Short, Walk On Girl (Yoru wa Mijikashi Arukeyo Otome), will screen in competition in the feature film category.

The two films are competing against Jong-duck Cho’s My Dogs, Jinjin and Akida, Clyde Petersen’s Torrey Pines, and one more film to be announced.

Lu over the wall opened in Japan on May 19, 2017, and won the top “Cristal for a Feature Film” award at the Annecy International Film Festival in June 2017. The film is Yuasa’s first anime film with an original story.

Yuasa directed the film at his Science SARU studio, and collaborated with Reiko Yoshida on the script. Yōko Nemu provided the original character designs, and Nobutake Ito adapted the designs for for animation and served as animation director. Takatsugu Muramatsu composed the music, and Kazuyoshi Saitō performed the theme song “Uta Utai no Ballad.”

Night is Short, Walk On Girl opened in Japan on April 7, 2017. The film adapts Tomihiko Morimi’s novel of the same name.

The main staff of The Tatami Galaxy anime returned for the film. Yuasa directed the film at his Science SARU studio, and Makoto Ueda wrote the script. Yūsuke Nakamura, the cover artist for the original novel as well as The Tatami Galaxy, designed the characters. Michiru Oshima composed the music.

The Ottawa International Animation Festival will be taking place September 20-24, 2017.
