Shout! Factory to Release the Lu Over the Wall Anime Film

GKIDS and Shout! Factory have announced that they will release Masaaki Yuasa’s Lu over the wall anime film as a Blu-ray Disc/DVD combo pack, on DVD, and as a digital download on February 5, 2019. The release will have English and Japanese audio, audio commentary, and a director interview.

Lu over the wall opened in Japan in May 2017, and won the top “Cristal for a Feature Film” award at the Annecy International Film Festival in June 2017. The film also won the Silver Prize for the “Best Animated Feature Film” audience award at Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival in August 2017.

GKIDS screened the film in the United States and Canada in May 2018. The film earned US$66,067 in its opening weekend.

Eight Anime Films Submitted for Consideration for the Animated Feature Oscar

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the list of 25 films that have been submitted for consideration in the Animated Feature Film category for the 91st Academy Awards. A maximum of five films from the list will receive the nomination.

Eight anime films are included in the list:

  • Naoko Yamada and Kyoto Animation’s Liz and the Blue Bird
  • Nobuyuki Takeuchi, Akiyuki Simbo, and SHAFT’s Fireworks
  • Masaaki Yuasa and Science SARU’s Lu over the wall and Night is Short, Walk On Girl
  • Isamu Imakake and HS Pictures Studio’s The Laws of the Universe: Part 1
  • Studio 4°C and Ankama’s MFKZ
  • Mari Okada and P.A. Works’ Maquia – When the Promised Flower Blooms
  • Mamoru Hosoda and Studio Chizu’s Mirai

The Academy will reveal the nominations on January 22, 2019. The 91st annual Academy Awards will be held on February 24, 2019.

Film Lineup Announced for the Los Angeles Anime Film Festival

The organizers of the Los Angeles Anime Film Festival (LA-AFF) have announced that this year’s event will take place from from September 21-23, 2018 at Regal L.A. Live: A Barco Innovation Center. The staff also unveiled the festival’s film lineup, which includes three North American premieres: Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions! the Movie: Take on Me, Shōnen Hollywood: Holly Stage for You Complete Edition, and King of Prism: PRIDE the HERO.

Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions! the Movie: Take on Me (Eiga Chūnibyō demo Koi ga Shitai! Take On Me) will screen on opening night.

Shōnen Hollywood creator Ikuyo Hashiguchi will attend the festival for a Q&A session.

Lu over the wall Anime Film Earns an Estimated US$66,000 in Its First Weekend of U.S. Screenings

GKIDS’ United States screening of Masaaki Yuasa and Science SARU’s Lu over the wall anime film grossed an estimated US$66,067 in its opening weekend. The film opened in 97 theaters on May 11, 2018.

The film is continuing to screen in theaters with both dubbed and subtitled screenings in the United States and Canada. Canadian screenings are currently only in Toronto with plans to later screen the film in Vancouver and Calgary.

The Lu over the wall Anime to Screen in United States Theaters on May 11, 2018

GKIDS has announced that it will screen Masaaki Yuasa and Science SARU’s Lu over the wall in United States theaters on May 11, 2018. Screenings will be available in both English and Japanese.

New York International Children’s Film Festival to Screen Lu over the wall and Horus – Prince of the Sun

The New York International Children’s Film Festival (NYICFF) will screen the East Coast premiere of Masaaki Yuasa’s Lu over the wall film as its opening night film on February 23, 2018, and again on March 4, 2018 and March 10, 2018. It will also screen Isao Takahata’s directorial debut film Horus – Prince of the Sun on February 24, 2018, March 10, 2018, and March 11, 2018. All screenings will be in English.

Complex x Complex and Lu Over the Wall Win at the 72nd Mainichi Film Awards

The Mainichi Shimbun and Sports Nippon Shimbun newspapers have announced the winners for the 72nd Annual Mainichi Film Awards.

Miyuki Fukuda’s Complex x Complex 25-minute short film won this year’s Best Animation Film award. Masaaki Yuasa’s Lu over the wall won the Noburou Oofuji Award, which honors animated works that offer new forms of creative expression.

This awards ceremony will be held on February 15, 2018 at the Muza Kawasaki Symphony Hall in Kawasaki, Kanagawa.
