Manga Review: Fly Me to the Moon Volume Three

Fly Me to the Moon Volume Three sees Nasa and Tsukasa taking an important step in their relationship.

Fly Me to the Moon Volume Three
Written by: Kenjiro Hata
Publisher: Shogakukan
English Publisher: VIZ Media
Release Date: January 12, 2021

The volume starts out with Nasa thinking about wanting to find a way to rent a bigger apartment. Tsukasa is happy with where they’re living at, though. This could have turned into a potential argument or fight, but fortunately, it doesn’t. When Tsukasa does decide to finally consider the idea, she logically points out that they would need a loan… but in order to get a loan, they would need a guarantor.

It’s at this point where Nasa realizes that he’s never told his parents that he’s gotten married. At first, his family seems to be upset by this, but after he mentions that he married the girl who saved his life, though, the attitude seems to change. Tsukasa wants to meet her new in-laws, but Nasa is unsure, telling her that his parents are “weird” and he’s not sure what they’ll say to her.

But his mother is a sharp cookie, and she realizes that they need to move because the apartment is too small. She says they might be willing to help, but under one condition…. that she and Nasa’s father meet Tsukasa. Well, since Tsukasa was already wanting to meet her in-laws, this works out perfectly. However, when Chitose catches wind of this, she decides she’ll try to find a way to break them up before they meet with Nasa’s parents.

Quite a bit of the volume focuses on Nasa and Tsukasa’s trip to Nara, which is where Nasa’s parents live. There are a couple of instances where there’s the potential for an argument or fight to happen, but they find a way to defuse the situations before they can escalate… much to Chitose’s chagrin. During a stop in Kyoto, Chitose insists that Nasa take her around and treat like a girlfriend, as a way to test Nasa. Tsukasa agrees, and accompanies Chitose’s servants elsewhere.

The rest of the volume focuses on family relationships. While Nasa has already met Chitose, he’s now in a spot of trying to prove himself to her and that he’s worthy for Tsukasa. For me, this portion of the story didn’t conclude the way I expected it, but for the story to move forward, it had to happen this way. Also, the way the section with Nasa and Chitose ended shows that Chitose does care about Tsukasa and comes to understand why she’s with Nasa. Chitose doesn’t necessarily agree about the idea of these two being together, but she now has a better sense of why Tsukasa has chosen to be with Nasa.

The most important part of the volume, though, is near the end, when Tsukasa finally meets Nasa’s parents. Nasa doesn’t get to be around when his parents talk to her, though, so he’s worried. But I thought the scene where they talk with her alone was rather sweet, and it makes sense they would act the way they do. She did save their son’s life, after all.

While I wouldn’t call Fly Me to the Moon a great manga series, it really isn’t bad for what it is. It should appeal to readers who enjoy light-hearted romantic comedy manga with little to no tension in the story. To readers who want more “substance” or “meat” to their stories, this series will likely not appeal to them.

Additional post about Fly Me to the Moon:

Manga Review: Fly Me to the Moon Volume Two

Fly Me to the Moon Volume Two depicts the evolution of Nasa and Tsukasa’s relationship.

Fly Me to the Moon Volume 2
Written by: Kenjiro Hata
Publisher: Shogakukan
English Publisher: VIZ Media
Release Date: November 10, 2020

I can’t believe when I read and reviewed the first volume of Fly Me to the Moon that I hadn’t realized the author for this series is the same author as Hayate the Combat Butler. Now knowing this information, the storytelling and art styles make sense, since this bears a similarity to Hayate the Combat Butler.

Volume One basically spent its time establishing the two main characters and their situation. Volume Two works at developing their story and adding more characters and elements in earnest. A pair of sisters are introduced: Kaname and Aya Arisagawa. Their family owns a nearby bath house, which becomes an important location in the series since Nasa’s apartment doesn’t have a tub. Nasa knows the sisters because he helped save the bath house from shutting down. Kaname is a blunt girl who enjoys tormenting Nasa, especially after learning that Nasa is now married. Aya, on the other hand, meets Tsukasa when Nasa isn’t around and assumes the two are simply related. The story also seems to be setting up that idea that Aya has feelings for Nasa.

We also get some character development for Tsukasa in this volume, especially with the arrival of her “sister,” Chitose Kaginoji. The reader, along with Nasa, learn a little bit about Tsukasa’s past through an explanation from Chitose, who has come to take Tsukasa home with her. When Chitose finds out that Tsukasa and Nasa are married, she flips out and makes it her goal to break the two of them up. With what we see of Chitose, as well as hints dropped about one of Tsukasa’s relatives, it appears the family she’s with is rather well-to-do… which is quite the difference from the type of life she currently has with Nasa.

But, most importantly, the relationship between Nasa and Tsukasa is evolving naturally. At first, it’s spurred on by Kaname’s tormenting of Nasa, and Nasa jumping to conclusions at things Kaname tells him. Nasa is clueless but does have good intentions. And Tsukasa is starting to figure out ways to help him out of his cluelessness and misunderstandings.

One thing that was present in this volume that hadn’t been in the first volume are jokes and references toward other anime and manga. I was greatly amused by the references that I picked up on. While we see later in the volume that Nasa doesn’t have much knowledge of pop culture, he has just enough to reference tropes in anime and manga.

Volume Two has helped to make the story more interesting than it was in Volume One. Enough hints have been dropped about Tsukasa to make her a more interesting character. The new characters and elements introduced here add more dimension to Nasa as well. And the development of Nasa and Tsukasa’s relationship also adds something to the title.

I’m glad I decided to give Volume Two a chance after my lukewarm reception to Volume One. I hoped that the lack of dimension in Volume One was due to it having to spend pretty much most of its pages developing the characters and their situation, and I’m glad that Volume Two finally provided a little more “meat” to this title. I’m now more genuinely interested in reading Volume Three when it’s released.

Manga Review: Fly Me to the Moon Volume One

Fly Me to the Moon Volume One tells the story of a young man named Nasa Yuzaki and how he meets the girl who becomes his wife.

Fly Me to the Moon Volume One
Written by: Kenjiro Hata
Publisher: Shogakukan
English Publisher: VIZ Media
Release Date: September 8, 2020

The main protagonist is a young man named Nasa Yuzaki. When he’s born, his parents give name him “Nasa,” and use the kanji for starry sky. Apparently, his parents want him to grow up with ambitions as big as the universe. It’s bad enough that they have such high expectations for their child, but to saddle him with a name that he gets teased with as a kid (because of the connection to the NASA agency) is a bit cruel. The teasing makes Nasa want to become so awesome that when anyone hears the word “Nasa,” they’ll think of him. In middle school, he decides he wants to go to one the top high schools in Japan that’s hard to get into. The teacher makes a comment to the effect of not getting too attached to this goal, because fate may have something different in store for him. At that point, you know this line of dialogue is a flag to set something up.

Unfortunately, fate does decide that things will not go as planned for Nasa. A sudden blizzard hits shortly before the entrance exams, and while walking home in the snow, Nasa sees a girl that he thinks is beautiful. He’s so unaware of his surroundings to notice that a truck is coming his way. The girl notices, though, and takes some of the impact to save Nasa. Nasa’s still pretty injured, though, but he is bound and determined to talk to this girl and ask her out. When he blurts out wanting to go out with her, she says yes but under one condition: he has to marry her. He blurts out that he agrees to this right before passing out.

From here, Nasa’s life changes drastically. He misses the entrance exams due to being in the hospital with his injuries, so he couldn’t start high school. The next year he passes the exams, but he drops out before paying the school fees. During this time, he keeps hoping the mystery girl will see him, but she doesn’t. Nasa drops out of school to work in customer service and delivery jobs, hoping to see her… but nothing. He also decides to get an apartment of his own in order to get away from his fretting parents.

Then, one day, after Nasa turns 18, the mystery girl appears at his doorstep and introduces herself as Tsukasa. She holds him to his promise of marriage and has even brought a marriage registration with her. It turns out she wasn’t kidding about needing to marry her before Nasa can go out with her. From here, the volume shows the two of them filling out and delivering the marriage registration to the ward office, and then the awkwardness of suddenly being married and needing to figure out how to accommodate Tsukasa at the apartment. And since these two have never dated, much less held hands before, there’s a lot of awkwardness when it comes to cohabitating and just being with each other.

As a character, Nasa is definitely book smart, but is not exactly the sharpest tool in the shed when it comes to a lot of other things. I don’t really have much of an impression of Tsukasa yet, though. There seems to be something a little “off” about her, but I can’t quite seem to put my finger on why I feel this way about her.

I admit that after finishing this volume, I’m not entirely sure how I feel about this series. It certainly feels like Volume One is setting up the story, but the whole getting the marriage started just kind of feels… too easy, somehow. I honestly hope that as the series continues, there will be something deeper that develops than what we see on the surface here. If the series stays at this surface level, I don’t think I’m going to enjoy it very much in the long run. But if it can start exposing a deeper story of some kind and have a twist showing that things aren’t simply what they seem right now, then I might see some promise here. I’m willing to try the next volume of Fly Me to the Moon at some point and see if this is a series I want to follow for the long haul.
