Dark Horse Warns of Possible Release Delays Due to the Oregon Wildfires

Dark Horse Comics’ official Twitter account has announced that its upcoming releases might be delayed due to the Oregon wildfires. The company’s offices are in Milwaukie, Oregon, which as of this writing, is currently in a Level 1 evacuation zone. The statement noted that while the company continues to be fully operational, several of its employees have evacuated their residences in the surrounding areas.

Dark Horse Comics’ statement reads:

Notice: Due to destructive fires sweeping across our state, the Dark Horse Comics Milwaukie offices are in a Level 1 evacuation zone (non-urgent, but prepared for potential evacuation). However, many of our employees in the surrounding areas have been forced to evacuate their homes. Please be patient with delays from Dark Horse Comics staff at this time. While we continue to be fully operational, we are encouraging staff to take care of themselves and their families first.

J-Novel Club Announces That Amazon Has Delisted Some of Its Light Novels and Manga on Kindle

J-Novel Club has announced that Amazon has delisted the How NOT to Summon a Demon Lord, Clockwork Planet, and The Greatest Magicmaster’s Retirement Plan novels, as well as the manga and novels of I Shall Survive Using Potions!. The books are no longer available for purchase on Amazon Kindle, except for the Japanese editions on Amazon’s Japanese website. Amazon has also canceled all pre-orders for the sixth volume of The Greatest Magicmaster’s Retirement Plan.

J-Novel Club added that it did not receive a notification of the delistings from Amazon, and were only made aware of it due to messages from users. It later verified from Amazon that the books were delisted by Kindle Content Review, but were not provided any other reason for the removal. In addition, J-Novel Club noted that those who have already purchased the books digitally will still be able to read and redownload them from their Amazon account.

Yen Press’ release of the No Game, No Life light novels are also no longer listed on Amazon, though Yen Press has not issued a statement. Similarly, Dark Horse Comics’ releases of the Oreimo and Eromanga Sensei manga are no longer listed on Amazon. As with Yen Press, Dark Horse Comics has not yet issued a statement.

Dark Horse Comics Reduces Releases and Allows Product Returns

Dark Horse Comics has announced that it will reduce the number of its releases in the coming months. The publisher also announced that it will allow return of periodicals up to 90 days after the on-sale date.

Both of these changes are due to the effect of the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) on its business.

Dark Horse Comics Announces New Licenses

Publisher Penguin Random House is listing English releases for the first volumes of Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! (Eizōken ni wa Te o Dasu na!) and Mob Psycho 100: Reigen (Reigen ~Reikyūchi Max 131 no Otoko~) under Dark Horse Comics.

The publishing company is listing the first volume of Sumito Ōwara’s Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! manga with an October 6, 2020 release. It is listing the Mob Psycho 100: Reigen manga for an October 27, 2020 release.

Penguin Random House is also listing a new Dark Horse Comics release of Hiroaki Samura’s Blade of the Immortal manga in a “deluxe” release, with the first volume scheduled for October 20, 2020. Like Dark Horse Comics’ previous omnibus re-releases of the manga, each volume of the deluxe release will compile three volumes from the original manga (Dark Horse Comics released the 10th and final omnibus volume in November 2019). However, the deluxe release will be hardcover with rounded spine, with higher paper quality, a faux-leather cover, a satin bookmark, and will retain the original 7×10 size format of the serialized manga for the first time. The release will retain the left-to-right reading order.

Dark Horse to Release the Hellsing Manga in a Deluxe Hardcover Edition

Anime News Network is reporting that Dark Horse will release the first volume of a hardcover version of Kouta Hirano’s Hellsing manga on July 14, 2020. The book will be available through Dark Horse’s own website on July 1, 2020.

According to Dark Horse, the Hellsing Deluxe Edition will mark the first release of the manga in its original 7×10 serialized format. The edition includes “an embossed casing, sewn binding, and ribbon marker.”

The Deluxe Edition will have three volumes. The first hardcover volume will have 696 pages and will compile the manga’s first four original volumes. The third hardcover volume will have a bonus section that will include three “Crossfire” side stories, which will make all three releases about equal in length.

Dark Horse Licenses Minetarō Mochizuki’s Isle of Dogs Manga

Dark Horse announced during its Anime Expo panel that the company has licensed Minetarō Mochizuki’s Isle of Dogs (Inugashima) manga based on Wes Anderson’s film of the same name. Dark Horse’s release of the manga will retain the format of the Japanese volume, including the hardback binding, 7.5 inch by 10.5 inch dimensions, slipcover, and end papers.

The publisher also announced that it will resume its English releases of Eiji Ohtsuka and Hosui Yamazaki’s The Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service manga, with future releases continuing in omnibus volumes. Dark Horse has not released a new volume of the manga since the 14th volume in 2015, but it released four omnibus volumes containing three volumes of the manga in each omnibus volume. A fifth omnibus volume that will collect volumes 13, 14, and 15 (published in English for the first time) is scheduled for March 20, 2020. A sixth omnibus volume that will collect volumes 16, 17, and 18 will follow. Dark Horse plans to continue the releases further if the response to the manga is positive.

Dark Horse Comics Licenses the Ms. Koizumi Loves Ramen Noodles Manga

Dark Horse Comics has confirmed with Anime News Network that it has licensed Naru Narumi’s Ms. Koizumi loves ramen noodles (Ramen Daisuki Koizumi-san) manga. Dark Horse Comics did not confirm the release date for the first volume of the manga, but Amazon is listing the volume with a September 24, 2019 release date.

Dark Horse Comics manga editor Carl Horn noted that the manga is Dark Horse’s first food manga. He added that Ayumi Kato Blystone, a Portland-based Japanese chef, is translating the manga, as the company is “interested in the nuances of Japanese ramen culture, including its social aspects.” The manga will also contain a bonus feature that will detail ramen shops and food carts in local areas including Portland where Dark Horse Comics is based.

Narumi launched the manga in Takeshobo’s Manga Life Storia magazine in 2013, and Takeshobo published the sixth compiled book volume on January 30, 2019.

Dark Horse Comics’ Announcement at New York Comic Con

Dark Horse Comics announced the following during New York Comic Con:

  • The publisher will release Gou Tanabe’s H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness (Kūki no Sanmyaku ni te) manga. Dark Horse will release the manga in two double-sized volumes featuring more than 300 pages each. Each volume will retail for US$19.99. The English release will retain the metallic gold motif for the cover and the silver tip-in sheets. The first volume will launch in the direct market on June 12, 2019. Zack Davisson is returning from Dark Horse’s release of the H.P. Lovecraft’s The Hound and Other Stories manga to translate H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness.

Dark Horse Comics’ Announcements at Otakon 2018

Dark Horse Comics announced at its Otakon panel that it has licensed Shinji Kajio and Kenji Tsuruta’s Emanon manga series and plans to release the first volume, Emanon Vol. 1: Memories of Emanon, in May 2019. Dana Lewis is translating the series.

The manga is based on Kajio’s Emanon prose stories, which Kajio began in 1983 with a first volume titled Omoide Emanon (Memories of Emanon).

Announcements at Anime Expo

Anime Expo is taking place in Los Angeles this weekend, which means there will be plenty of anime and manga announcements at industry panels. I will be gathering up all of the announcements in this post, so please keep an eye here for updates.

Aniplex of America

  • Aniplex of America announced that it will screen the anime film of Yoru Sumino’s I Want to Eat Your Pancreas novel in theaters in the United States. However, the company did not reveal the opening date for the film.
  • The company also announced that it will screen Fate/stay night: Heaven’s Feel II. lost butterfly, the second film in the Fate/stay night: Heaven’s Feel anime film trilogy, in theaters in the United States in 2019. It was also announced that the company will release Fate/stay night: Heaven’s Feel I. presage flower, the first film, on Blu-ray Disc on November 20, 2018.


  • Crunchyroll announced that it will simulcast the Music Girls anime in Summer 2018, and the RErideD: Derrida, who leaps through time, Double Decker! Doug & Kirill, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, and Radiant anime in Fall 2018.
  • The company also announced that it will debut of the first episode of The Rising of The Shield Hero anime at the Crunchyroll Expo event, which will be taking place September 1-3, 2018. Crunchyroll will also host guests for the event.
  • Crunchyroll announced that it will release the Planet With, Holmes of Kyoto, and Crossing Time manga to its digital manga platform. Planet With and Holmes of Kyoto will premiere on the platform on July 10, 2018, and simultaneous publication with Japan will begin on July 29, 2018. Crossing Time will premiere on the platform on July 10, 2018, and new chapters will launch every week.

Dark Horse Comics

  • Dark Horse Comics announced that it has licensed Lynn Okamoto’s Elfen Lied manga. The company will release the 12-volume series in four omnibus volumes, the first of which is scheduled to be released on May 22, 2019.

Eleven Arts Anime Studio

  • Eleven Arts Anime Studio announced that it will have theatrical screenings of Naoko Yamada and Kyoto Animation’s Liz and the Blue Bird anime film, as well as Wit Studio’s Laughing Under the Clouds Gaiden anime film trilogy. It was also announced that it will open the Haikara-San: Here Comes Miss Modern Part 2 film in theaters in Winter 2019.

FUNimation Entertainment

  • FUNimation has announced that it has licensed Studio Trigger and Tsuburaya Productions’ SSSS.Gridman anime series and will premiere it on its FunimationNow streaming service in Fall 2018. It will have an English dub.
  • The company also announced that it will continue its stream of Tokyo Ghoul:re with the second season in October 2018.
  • FUNimation announced that its home video releases of Pop Team Epic and Dragon Ball Super Part 5 are scheduled for October 2018.
  • The company announced that the High Speed! -Free! Starting Days- prequel film, Free! -Take Your Marks- film, and Free! -Timeless Medley- Kizuna and Free! -Timeless Medley- Yakusoku compilation films are scheduled to be released on home video in October 2018. A special box collection will also bundle all four films in an exclusive box.
  • FUNimation will release the four-episode finale arc for the ReLIFE anime on home video, as well as streaming on FunimationNow.
  • The company will re-release Witch Hunter Robin on home video on October 23, 2018.
  • The company will release Mamoru Hosoda’s The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, Wolf Children, and The Boy and The Beast anime films in a box set.
  • FUNimation announced that it has licensed the Zillion (Akai Kōdan Zillion) anime and plans to release the complete series in October 2018. The release will be English-subtitled.

Kodansha Comics and Vertical Comics

  • Kodansha Comics announced new manga licenses and print releases at a joint panel with Vertical Comics. Kodansha Comics will release the following series: The Seven Deadly Sins: Seven Days, Boarding School Juliet (in print), Love in Focus (Renzu-sō no Sankaku), Witch Hat Atelier (Tongari Bōshi no Atelier), Gleipnir, Quintessential Quintuplets (in print), Edens Zero (in print), Hiro Mashima’s Playground (Mashima-en), Fairy Tail: Lightning Gods, 10 Dance, Hitorijime My Hero, and Yuri Is My Job! (Watashi no Yuri wa Oshigoto Desu!).
  • The companies also announced that the 35th anniversary Akira manga box set will be back in stock in September 2018.


  • Netflix has announced that Sanrio and Fanworks’ Aggressive Retsuko (Aggretsuko) anime will get a second season that will debut on Netflix in 2019.

Right Stuf and Nozomi Entertainment

  • Right Stuf and Nozomi Entertainment announced that Right Stuf will release the Mobile Fighter G Gundam Ultra Edition Blu-ray Set during the 2018 holiday season, and will release the Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Ultra Edition Blu-ray Set in 2019. The Gundam Seed release will include both English dubs.
  • Right Stuf and Nozomi Entertainment announced that Nozomi Entertainment will release the Gravitation, Please Teacher!, and Please Twins! anime on Blu-ray Disc. The company also confirmed an “Ultra Edition Blu-ray Set” for its previously revealed Blu-ray Disc release of The Irresponsible Captain Tylor anime.
  • Right Stuf and Nozomi Entertainment announced that Nozomi Entertainment has licensed the Galaxy Angel A, Galaxy Angel AA, and Galaxy Angel S anime, and will release those anime on Blu-ray Disc. The company also revealed that its release of Galaxy Angel Z will be available for pre-order starting on July 8, 2018, and will ship on October 2, 2018. The Galaxy Angel Z release will include all 19 episodes of the television series, a clean opening video, a clean ending video, a commercial collection, and a “Now I Get It!” Galaxy Angel Lectures Featurette. Nozomi Entertainment’s Galaxy Angel Z release will include both English and Japanese audio.


  • Section23’s Maiden Japan imprint announced that it has licensed the Human Crossing, Blue Gale Xabungle, Space Runaway Ideon, Armored Trooper Votoms, Hataraki Man, Basquash!, Yumeiro Pâtissière, and Maria Watches Over Us anime. Maiden Japan’s Maria Watches Over Us license includes all of the original video anime (OVAs), and the series will stream on HIDIVE prior to a Blu-ray Disc release. The panelists noted that there are talks for an English dub.

Sentai Filmworks

  • Sentai Filmworks announced that it will release Tada Never Falls in Love, Real Girl, UQ Holder! Magister Negi Magi! 2, Takunomi., and My Girlfriend is Shobitch anime series and the Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions! – Take on Me anime film with English dubs.
  • It was also announced that the company has licensed the second season of Real Girl.
  • Sentai Filmworks also announced the main cast for the English dubs for the Made in Abyss and Scum’s Wish anime.
  • The company announced that it has licensed the Mr. Tonegawa: Middle Management Blues (Chūkan Kanriroku Tonegawa) anime, and that it will stream an English dubcast on HIDIVE beginning in August 2018.

Seven Seas Entertainment

  • Seven Seas Entertainment announced the following new manga licenses: Kiyoko Iwami’s Transparent Light Blue (Tōmei na Usui Mizuiro ni) yuri manga, Yasuhito Nogi’s A Certain Scientific Railgun: Astral Buddy (Toaru Kagaku no Railgun Gaiden: Astral Buddy) spin-off manga, Ayami Kazama’s Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid: Elma’s Office Lady Diary (Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon: Eruma no OL Nikki) spin-off manga, Muraji’s Sorcerous Stabber Orphen Heed My Call, Beast! manga (Japanese title Majutsushi Orphen Hagure Tabi: Wa ga Yobigoe ni Kotae yo, Kemono), Asumiko Nakamura’s Classmates manga (both Dōkyūsei and the two-volume Sotsugyōsei; spring/summer 2019), and Mine Yoshizaki’s Dragon Quest Monsters+ manga (scheduled for Winter 2019).

Studio Trigger

  • Studio Trigger announced that it is launching a Patreon page. Patrons who pledge US$1 per month will have access to a high resolution .jpg file from Studio Trigger’s live drawing sessions. Those who pledge US$5 per month will have access to .psd, .ai, and clip studio files with the layers untouched from Trigger’s live drawing sessions. Once the studio hits US$1,500 per month, it will start streaming a live-drawing session with one of its animators/illustrators. The studio will use the initial earnings to prepare equipment for the live streams. As of this writing, the page has 1,121 patrons have pledges totaling US$3,643 per month.


  • Sunrise President & CEO Yasuo Miyakawa announced that Sunrise is collaborating with Legendary Pictures on a live-action Gundam film.

VIZ Media

  • VIZ Media announced that it has licensed the Smashed: Junji Ito Story Collection manga and the Megalobox anime. The license for Megalobox includes the exclusive theatrical, broadcast, and home media rights, as well as the non-exclusive streaming, merchandise, and consumer products rights.
  • VIZ Media announced during its JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure panel that it has licensed both Hirohiko Araki’s JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable manga, as well as the manga’s live-action film adaptation. The company also announced it has licensed the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind anime. The company revealed that Billy Kametz will voice the character Jōsuke Higashikata in the English dub of the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable anime, which will premiere on Toonami on August 18, 2018.

Warner Bros. Anime

  • Warner Bros. Anime announced that the first two episodes of Hi Score Girl will premiere in the United States at Otakon 2018, which will be held from August 10-12, 2018 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C. The event will host special guests for the screening.

Yen Press

  • Yen Press announced the following new manga licenses: Kei Sanbe’s Yume de Mita: Anoko no Tame ni manga, author Memarei and artist Chabane Uchida’s Monster Wrestling manga, Okada Atsushi’s Nyankees manga, Suu Minazuki’s Plunderer manga, author Homura Kawamoto and artist Katsura Saiki’s Kakegurui Twins manga, and Tomiyaki Kagisora’s Happy Sugar Life manga.
  • The company also announced that it will begin publishing print editions for Shut-In Shoutarou Kominami Takes on the World and The Witch’s House – The Diary of Ellen manga. Yen Press is already offering the series digitally.
