VIZ Media Launches the Fantasy Adventure Manga Series Children of the Whales

VIZ Media delivers a new post-apocalyptic fantasy adventure manga series with the launch of Children of the Whales on November 21, 2017.

The series, featuring story and art by creator Abi Umeda, is rated “T+” for Older Teens and will be published in print and digital editions under the VIZ Signature imprint. Volume 1 will carry a print MSRP of $12.99 U.S. / $17.99 CAN. The series also launches digitally via VIZ.com and the VIZ Manga App, as well as from the NOOK, Kobo, Kindle, iBooks, comiXology, and Google Play stores. Future volumes of Children of the Whales, which is also continuing in Japan, will be published in English by VIZ Media on a bi-monthly basis.

In an endless sea of sand drifts the Mud Whale, a floating island city of clay and magic. In its chambers a small community clings to survival, cut off from its own history by the shadows of the past. Chakuro is the archivist for the Mud Whale, diligently chronicling the lives and deaths of his people. As one of the short-lived thymia wielders, he knows his time is limited and is determined to leave a better record than his predecessors. But the steady pace of their isolated existence on the Mud Whale is abruptly shattered when a scouting party discovers a mysterious young girl who seems to know more about their home than they do.

ReLIFE, Shuriken and Pleats, and Children of the Whales Manga Win France’s Mangawa Award

The official website for France’s “Mangawa” award has announced that Yayoiso’s ReLIFE, Matsuri Hino’s Shuriken and Pleats, and Abi Umeda’s Children of the Whales (Kujira no Kora wa Sajō ni Utau or Les enfants de la baleine) won the 2017 awards for the shōnen, shōjo, and seinen categories, respectively.

French bookstore L’ange Bleu began holding the awards in 2005 in order to introduce students to high-quality manga titles from the previous year. About 11,000 middle school and high school students voted on the results this year via their schools or local libraries.

VIZ Media Announces New Manga, Novel and Art Book Acquisitions at Anime Boston 2017

VIZ Media announced plans to expand its manga publishing catalog with an array of notable new title acquisitions during its official panel event held at Anime Boston.

The new series set for launch this Fall and Winter include the post-apocalyptic fantasy adventure Children of the Whales as well as an in-depth exploration of the artwork from Sui Ishida’s Tokyo Ghoul in Tokyo Ghoul Illustrations: Zakki. The new shojo series SP Baby, from the creator of Happy Marriage?!, and a captivating anthology of horror manga in Shiver: Junji Ito Selected Stories were also announced at Anime Boston. The battle-filled novel Juni Taisen: Zodiac Warriors will be the first of the newly announced titles to debut in Fall 2017.
