Anime Frontier Powered By Crunchyroll, the North Texas Japanese pop culture festival from the creators of Anime NYC, have announced a rare appearance by Japanese singer Yoko Takahashi at the 2022 Anime Frontier convention. Takahashi is most known for singing the theme song to Hideaki Anno’s genre-defining anime saga, Neon Genesis Evangelion. The special concert, titled Texas Impact, will take place at 2:00 p.m. CST on December 4, 2022 inside the Fort Worth Convention Center Ballroom. In addition, the beloved performer will also host a panel and autograph signing at Anime Frontier, and the Anime Frontier Show Store will offer a selection of rare Japanese Neon Genesis Evangelion items in her honor. The iconic singer has performed sold-out concerts in Los Angeles, Paris, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and more.
Designed as an unparalleled convention experience, the festival is thrilled to bring this performance to a Southwest stage for the first time, delighting Japanese pop culture devotees from across the region. The festival is a three-day (December 2-4, 2022) celebration of anime, manga, and Japanese pop culture created with close ties to the creators and companies at the center – bringing Texas audiences closer to Japan than ever before.
“Neon Genesis Evangelion and Yoko Takahashi’s ‘The Cruel Angel’s Thesis’ have stood the test of time as two of the most iconic ambassadors of anime to audiences around the world, and we’re deeply honored to now bring this world-class singer to the Southwest,” said Anime Frontier Show Director Peter Tatara. “We know fans across Texas and far beyond will be moved by Takahashi’s music at Anime Frontier.”
The critically-acclaimed and globally-renowned Neon Genesis Evangelion began its broadcast in 1995 in Japan, from the mind of writer/director Hideaki Anno. Evangelion‘s revolutionary storytelling has created a media empire spanning movies, video games, comics, and toys and continues to influence both Japanese and American film and television today. Although created 27 years ago, critics continue to rank the series highly, coming in at number eight on IGN.com‘s Best Anime Series of All Time List released earlier in September 2022.
At the heart of this has been Evangelion‘s platinum-selling theme, “The Cruel Angel’s Thesis” by Yoko Takahashi. Previously the Best Newcomer Award winner at both the Japan Records Awards and Japan Cable Awards, Takahashi was brought to international attention because of her Evangelion songs – “The Cruel Angel’s Thesis” followed by “Soul’s Refrain.”
Returning for its second year, the first Anime Frontier launched to great acclaim attracting over 20 celebrity guests, exhibitions from major Japanese entertainment publishers, and 13,000 enthusiastic fans. This year’s festival anticipates 20,000 passionate attendees. In addition to Takahashi, Anime Frontier will welcome Japanese rock band FLOW and fan-favorite voice actors like Adam McArthur and Zach Aguilar.
