Montreal’s 25th Fantasia International Film Festival has announced the winners for this year’s festival. Fortune Favors Lady Nikuko (Gyokō no Nikuko-chan) won the “Axis: The Satoshi Kon Award for Excellence in Animation” award as a Special Mention. The Deer King won the Bronze Audience Award for Best Animated Film. Satoshi Kon, The Illusionist won the Bronze Audience Award for Best Documentary.
Fortune Favors Lady Nikuko, Studio 4°C’s anime film of Kanako Nishi’s Gyokō no Nikuko-chan (Nikuko of the Fishing Harbor) novel opened on June 11, 2021. The film will compete in the Ottawa International Animation Festival (OIAF), which will take place from September 22-October 3, 2021.
Shika no Ō: Yuna to Yakusoku no Tabi (The Deer King: The Promised Journey With Yuna), the anime film of Nahoko Uehashi’s Shika no Ō (The Deer King) medical fantasy novel series was previously scheduled to open in Japan on September 18, 2020, and it was later scheduled to open on September 10, 2021. Unfortunately, that premiere has been canceled due to COVID-19, as of this writing, a new premiere date has not been announced. The film screened in June 2021 in competition at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
The French documentary film Satoshi Kon, l’illusionniste (previously titled Satoshi Kon: La Machine À Rêves) by director Pascal-Alex Vincent had its world premiere at the Festival de Cannes 2021, which took place from July 6-17, 2021.
The virtual film festival streamed from August 5-25, 2021.
