The entirety of this season was focused on Karasuno’s match against Shiratorizawa Academy. It’s a pivotal match, because the winner becomes the representative for Miyagi Prefecture at Nationals. Shiratorizawa has always advanced to Nationals in the past and is thus known as a “powerhouse” school. Of course, this sets up a conflict between a dark horse team that no one expects to win and a strong opponent.

What I liked about this season is how it built in intensity. While there is some tension from the get-go, it gradually builds until it reaches its peak during the final two episodes. The way the match was written, Episode Nine was a major nail biter for the audience, and it was anyone’s guess as to how the teams would score. The final episode brings the match and the intensity to an end, and it presents the aftermath of this hard-fought game.

Near the end of the season, there was also some character development presented for Wakatoshi Ushijima, Satori Tendo, as well as Karasuno’s third years. My favorite of these was the backstory for Karasuno’s third years, because we got to see them when they were first years. They were so adorable! Wakatoshi’s backstory was kind of interesting, but Satori’s didn’t help to make him a more sympathetic character.

One of the biggest things, though, was the change that took place for Tsukishima. By the end of the third season, he became more of a team player. This helped to make him a much more likable character.

But all in all, it was an enjoyable season.

The Blu-ray video for this set has 1080p High Definition / 16×9, and the audio includes English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 and Japanese DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. I had no complaints about either the video or audio quality of this release.

The bonus features are all included on the second disc in the set. The most interesting one was the Japanese promos, but I was a little confused by the chronological order that Sentai put these in. The first promos were for the Japanese DVD and Blu-ray releases, then followed by the ads for when the series was airing on Japanese television, then ended with the teaser promos from before the season started airing in Japan. Maybe it’s just me, but it would have made more sense to start with the teaser promos and end with the promos for the Japanese DVD and Blu-ray releases.

Outside of this, the only other bonus features are clean opening animations, a clean closing animation, and trailers for other Sentai Filmworks releases. At least the inclusion of the Japanese promos made the bonus features a little more interesting for a Sentai Filmworks release. I wonder if these were included in part to make up for the fact that the season was so short.

If you’re a fan of the Haikyu!! franchise and already have the first two seasons of the series in your anime home video library, you really need to get this release if you haven’t already. At the time of this writing, it’s a little on the high-priced side for how short of a season it is, though. If you feel that price point is worth it, then it’s worth getting it. But if you want to get this release for a cheaper price, then I would recommend watching and seeing if any online retailers end up having a sale on it at some point.
