Mobile Suit Gundam Zeta Collection 2 picks up exactly where the first DVD collection ended. The second half of the series sees the return of Mineva Zabi, the last surviving member of the Zabi family and the current leader of Zeon, who had been a baby in the original Mobile Suit Gundam anime. But since she’s still a child, Haman Karn handles her affairs for her.

Paptimus Scirocco, a very powerful Newtype affiliated with the Titans, figures prominently in this second half as well. He also exudes great charisma, which allows him to manipulate people with his charms. He ends up influencing two women in the series, Reccoa Londe and Sarah Zabiarov. Sarah is so loyal to him that it’s almost an obsession. Scirocco also executes underhanded plots to try to assume control over the Titans and the Earth Sphere. He also forges an alliance with Haman, but it doesn’t last.

Rosamia Badam, the first cyber-Newtype to appear in the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise, also plays an important role in the second half of the series. After being defeated in battle by Kamille, Quattro, and Katz, she reappears in this portion of the story on one of the colonies and claims to be Kamille’s sister. While Kamille knows this isn’t true, he pities her and takes her back to the ship. But she escapes and the Titans use mind control waves to get her back under their control. By the end of the series, Rosamia and Kamille have one more confrontation.

While the storytelling in this half of the series is interesting, the story itself becomes rather strange. Like I quipped in my “Anime Spotlight” article for Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam: “If I didn’t know better, I would have thought that George R.R. Martin was consulted for the final two episodes because of how many of the main characters seem to die at that point. Sheesh!”

In the end, many of the new characters who were introduced in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam are killed off. While Kamille survives, he is comatose and psychologically crippled… which is an important plot element for the next Gundam series. Fa survives as well. But to me, it was a bit of a disappointment that we met these new characters and got to know them, and most of them don’t survive. Unfortunately, even some of the characters from the original Mobile Suit Gundam anime that appear in this series are killed off as well.

While Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam is okay for what it is, it’s missing something that the original Mobile Suit Gundam anime had. I can’t really explain what that is, though. Maybe part of the problem is that while the first series had a small core cast between the two sides, Zeta Gundam has a lot more characters it’s focusing on, as well as three entities that come into play instead of two. Fortunately, the third side (the remnants of the Zeon empire) appear later in the series. But once they’re introduced, though, the storyline becomes more complicated. While Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam has its faults, it’s an important part of the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise, because it’s the first series that continued the franchise after its revival with the three compilation films of the original Mobile Suit Gundam anime.

When it comes to the bonus features included on this release, there is only a clean version of the opening and ending that appear in these episodes.

If you’re a fan of Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam and want to add it your home anime library, then this release is worth getting. While watching this set, I had no real complaints about the audio or video quality.
