Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2202: Episode 24 – “Yamato, Attack the Comet Empire!”

The episode immediately begins with the Yamato warping into the scene and launching a battle with the Comet Empire. They’re quickly joined by Gamilans, who promise to defend the Earth as the Yamato goes after the Comet Empire and take down the Golem. While fighting alongside the Gamilans, it was nice to see some references to things we saw in Space Battleship Yamato 2199 (submarines, drill missile, etc.), except these were being used against the Comet Empire this time.

At first, the Yamato seems to have the upper hand, since they have Toko (aka Sabera) to hack into the Comet Empire’s systems and take control of things. Unfortunately, things take a turn with Zworder has one of his men override Toko’s commands.

We get a section of hearing Yuki’s thoughts. Although she doesn’t remember going to Terezart, she has a memory of Teresa. Her thoughts are aimed at Teresa as we see various deaths and destruction going on in the ship. But… Analyzer and Hijikata! Analyzer can probably be repaired, but Hijikata is definitely gone. Right before his death, he appoints Kodai as the new captain… which finally gets us to the setup that we know from the original story.

Right now, I’m unsure of the fates of Tokugawa and Kato. I hope they’re both OK.

Right near the end of the episode, Kodai and Yamamoto make it to the throne room, and a fight breaks out. But at the end of the episode, Zworder does something that terrifies the Sabera that he has in the throne room. The last thing the audience sees is a big explosion, so we’ll have to find out in the next episode what’s going to happen.

This episode was intense! But it’s going to continue being intense, since the climax hasn’t happened yet. From the preview, it’s obvious that we’re getting ever close to that point. And a plot point that’s referenced in the preview comes from the original telling of this story, so it’s going to be interesting to see how this plays out. But now I have to wait a week to find out what happens…
