Spring 2019 Anime Season: Week 1

I announced last week that I would be doing one weekly blog post rather than blog posts for individual episodes of simulcasts that I watch each season (with the exception of Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2202, since that series is close to ending). This post is the inaugural post for this new feature, and my plan is to make these posts on Mondays.

Unfortunately, this week’s post is on the small side. Case Closed didn’t have an episode this week, I’m doing Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2202 separately, and Attack on Titan Season 3 Part 2 hasn’t launched yet. So for this first post, Fruits Basket gets all of the focus.

Fruits Basket: Episode 1 – “See You After School”

Oh my gosh! After watching the first episode, I am already in love with this reboot of Fruits Basket! The animation style perfectly captures the look of the characters, but with a modernized look. And since I’m familiar with the original manga, I liked seeing the reference to Tohru getting a cap as a little girl (and that we see the cap prominently among her possessions in the tent early on in the episode). Even though I knew what was coming for Tohru’s flashback sequences, the way it was told in this version of the anime started moving me to tears. The depictions of the animal forms that we see at the end of the episode are adorable. This reboot is off to a solid start, and I can’t wait to see the next episode!
