Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2202: Episode 21 – “Escape from the Nightmare!”

The episode opens with brief backstory for the captain of the Ginga. After that, we go to Zemuria, where those aboard the Yamato are still talking with the possessed Analyzer. When Sabera is brought in to talk with the two consciousnesses that are possessing Analyzer, the existence of an item that can destroy that Gatlanteans is revealed. Unfortunately, since Zworder has a connection with Sabera, he is aware that the enemy knows about the existence of this item. He orders Zemuria to be destroyed, and a big focus of the episode is on the Yamato trying to escape.

We also see how much the Earth government is relying on the time fault with the hope of defeating Zworder and the white comet. The question I kept thinking about during this scene is, “What’s going to happen if Zworder destroys the time fault?” I have a strong feeling that this exact scenario is going to happen, especially since it’s pretty clear that the Earth government does not have a backup plan for if the time fault becomes unusable.

Aboard the Ginga, we see a debate between AI running the ships and making the decisions versus humans being played out. It’s also revealed the one plan that the Earth government has to keep humanity alive if for some reason, even with a working time fault, the war just keeps on going. Shima’s reaction perfectly summed up my feelings on this plan.

Near the end of the episode, the captain of the Andromeda plays an important role for saving the Yamato, and it appears that the story is working at trying to bring redemption for Kato. We also see how the AI vs. human debate ultimately comes to an end aboard the Ginga.

Wow. We’re down to the final few episodes of Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2202 now, and it’s got so much more dimension and depth when compared to the original version of this story. While I think I can predict one or two of the remaining plot points, I have a feeling that I’ll still be surprised by how the remainder of the story plays out. I can’t wait to watch these final episodes and find out if I predicted anything correctly or if I’m completely off-base.
