Voice Actress Etsuko Ichihara Passes Away

Voice actress Etsuko Ichihara passed away on January 12, 2019 due to heart failure. She was 82 years old at the time of her passing.

Starting in 1975, Ichihara narrated and voiced Manga Nihon Mukashi Banashi, the widely watched television anime series that recounts Japanese folk tales. Her other anime roles include Cyborg 0010 (Helena) in Cyborg 009 and the Monster Wars, Hilda in Horus – Prince of the Sun, Bilblanc in Chibikko Remi to Meiken Kapi, the narrator in Ashita no Kibō -Kanashimi yo Arigatō: Takae Tsuneo Monogatari-, Granny in Miyori in the Sacred Forest, and Hitoha Miyamizu in your name.

Outside of anime, Ichihara won the Japan Academy Prize for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Black Rain, a 1989 film adapting a novel about the fallout from the Hiroshima bombing.
