I first watched the original Mobile Suit Gundam anime a few years ago. I discovered that Bandai’s DVD box sets for this series were starting to disappear, so I wanted to be able grab them at a good price in order to have the opportunity to watch this iconic series. It’s obviously an anime from the 1970’s, but it was good for what it was.
I’m bringing this up as part of the 12 Days of Anime for 2018, because for our wedding anniversary this year, my husband got me the two DVD sets for Mobile Suit Gundam Zeta, the two DVD sets for Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ, and Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack. Apparently, before our anniversary, Right Stuf was having a limited time sale on Mobile Suit Gundam releases, where a customer could buy five for $50.
It’s been a few years since we had watched the original Mobile Suit Gundam series, so we’re re-watching our DVD sets for the first series again to refresh our memories before moving on to the new items that I got. So, I’m spending the last few weeks of 2018 rediscovering Mobile Suit Gundam. As of this writing (in late November 2018), we’ve made it through the first 10 episodes of the original series. I’d forgotten just how whiny Amuro was being early on.
By the time this piece publishes, though, we should have made it through the first series, and probably be working our way through Mobile Suit Gundam Zeta. I’m looking forward to not only rediscovering the original series, but finally seeing what came next in the franchise.
