30 Day Anime Challenge: Day 17 – Favorite Supporting Male Anime Character

For Day 17, the prompt is to talk about my favorite supporting male anime character. There’s a lot of great candidates out there, but I could only choose one. And the one that I decided to go with is…

… Shikamaru Nara from Naruto. When we first really get to know him at the beginning of the Chunin Exam arc, he just comes across as a bit of a lazy guy. But over the course of the exam, the audience gets to see that Shikamaru’s actually smart and is a great strategist. The audience also gets to see his emotions when he returns from leading the ill-fated Sasuke retrieval mission. But he becomes an ever more developed character in Naruto Shippuden, especially after dealing with the loss of his mentor. I really like Shikamaru’s depiction: he may be smart and usually keep a cool head during missions, but he also has emotions and vulnerabilities. He just comes across as a really cool guy who I’d like to be friends with if he were a real person.
