My favorite mech anime takes us back to the 1980s.
My choice is Super Dimension Fortress Macross. My first exposure to this anime came in the mid-1980s, which I saw an English dubbed version of the series that was included as part of Robotech. This portion of the story was always my favorite in Robotech. While I enjoyed the English dub as a child, part of me was always curious what the original Japanese version was like.
My curiosity was finally sated in the early 2000s, when AnimEigo released a DVD box set of the original Super Dimension Fortress Macross anime. In a lot of ways, the story was very similar. The main difference is that the “Protoculture” concept that Harmony Gold created for Robotech wasn’t part of the story. Also, there were some shots that we cut from the original due to content that was included that just would not have been acceptable on American television being aimed at children. What I loved, and still love about it, actually, is that the characters’ interactions and development are just as important to the series as the mecha and the battles. I also liked the inclusion of the music angle, thanks to the character of Lynn Minmay.
