David Ogden Stiers, English Voice for Some of Studio Ghibli’s Works, Passes Away

David Ogden Stiers, an actor who provided voices in the English dubs of some of Studio Ghibli’s films, passed away on March 3, 2018 from bladder cancer. He was 75 years old at the time of his passing.

Stiers provided the English voice for Kamaji in Spirited Away, the grandfather in Porco Rosso, and the narrator in My Neighbors the Yamadas.

Outside of anime, Stiers was best known for his his portrayal of Major Charles Emerson Winchester III on M*A*S*H. His first screen credit was as the announcer in George Lucas’ 1971 film, THX 1138. Stiers also provided the voice of Cogsworth and the narrator in Disney’s animated Beauty and the Beast, as well as Major Charles Emerson Winchester III in Pocahontas, the Archdeacon in The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Dr. Jumba Jookiba in Lilo & Stitch.

Over his career, Stiers has appeared in numerous live-action and animated productions, and provided voices for video games.
