- Seijun Suzuki, director, passed away on February 13, 2017 at the age of 93 due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
- Yushi Matsuyama, composer, passed away on April 7, 2017 at the age of 79 due to burns sustained in a house fire.
- Minoru Takanashi, anime producer, passed away in April 2017 at the age of 54.
- Ed Blaylock, voice actor, passed away on April 19, 2017 at the age of 64 after a battle with cancer.
- John Cygan, voice actor, passed away on May 13, 2017 at the age of 63 after a battle with cancer.
- Seiji Yokoyama, composer, passed away on July 8, 2017 at the age of 82 due to pneumonia.
- Masaaki Hirao, composer, passed away on July 21, 2017 at the age of 79 due to pneumonia.
- Shoichi Masuo, animator and director, passed away on July 24, 2017 at the age of 57 while under medical care for an unspecified illness.
- Reiko Seno, voice actor, passed away on August 8, 2017 at the age of 84.
- Nobuyuki Furuta, voice actor, passed away on August 29, 2017 at the age of 59 due to a ruptured aneurysm in his bronchial arteries.
