Announcements from Otakon 2017

Otakon is taking place August 11-13, 2017, and this post will consolidate all of the announcements made during the convention. Please watch this post over the weekend for updates.

Aniplex of America

  • Aniplex of America announced that the English dub for the Blue Exorcist: Kyoto Saga anime will begin streaming exclusively on Hulu on September 1, 2017.
  • The company announced the release dates and details for Kizumonogatari III: Reiketsu-hen, Koyomimonogatari, and Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale. Koyomimonogatari will be released as a two-disc Blu-ray Disc set on December 19, 2017. The set will bundle a deluxe booklet, pin-up postcards, and a package illustrated by Akio Watanabe. The release will have a suggested retail price of US$89.98 and a sales price of US$69.98. The release will include English subtitles and Japanese audio, and will feature a promo video and commercial collection. Kizumonogatari III: Reiketsu-hen will be released on November 21, 2017. The Blu-ray Disc will bundle a soundtrack, deluxe booklet, pin-up postcard set, and package illustrated by Akio Watanabe. The set will have a suggested retail price of US$89.98 and a sales price of US$69.98. The release will include Japanese audio and English subtitles, and will also include a theatrical trailer, promo videos, and commercials. Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale will be released on December 19, 2017 as a limited edition Blu-ray Disc, a standard edition Blu-ray Disc, and a standard edition DVD. Both Blu-ray Disc releases will also include the “Sword Art OFFline –Ordinal Scale–” anime short. The releases will all feature Japanese and English audio and English and Spanish subtitles. The limited Blu-ray Disc set will bundle a bonus music CD, a deluxe booklet, and a rigid box, and has a suggested retail price of US$79.98 and a sales price of US$69.98. The standard Blu-ray Disc has a suggested retail price of US$49.98 and a sales price of US$39.98. The DVD has a suggested retail price of US$39.98 and a sales price of US$29.98.

Crunchyroll

  • Crunchyroll announced that it is adding Jūni Taisen to its Fall 2017 simulcast lineup, and that the series will be simulcast under the title, Jūni Taisen: Zodiac War.
  • The service is hosting Jūni Taisen voice actors Hiromi Igarashi and Shun Horie at its Crunchyroll Expo event on August 25-27, 2017 at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, California.

Discotek Media

  • Discotek Media announced that it has licensed Cyborg 009, Project ARMS, NieA_7, Tomorrow’s Joe (Ashita no Joe), Bananya, and Lupin III: The Legend of the Gold of Babylon. The company will release the 2001 Cyborg 009 The Cyborg Soldier television series on DVD. Project ARMS will ship on DVD with Japanese audio and English subtitles and an English dub. The release will include both seasons and all 52 episodes. The DVD and Blu-ray Disc release of the Tomorrow’s Joe film will have both Japanese audio with English subtitles and an English dub. The English dub will be from the Tai Seng DVD. The release will be an HD transfer, the same as the Japanese Blu-ray Disc release. Discotek will release Bananya on DVD and on Blu-ray Disc for the first time. The company is producing an English dub for the anime. The release will also include Japanese audio with English subtitles. Lupin III: The Legend of the Gold of Babylon will be available on DVD and for the first time in HD on Blu-ray Disc. NieA_7 will be available on DVD and Blu-ray Disc. The release will include the same bonus videos as Geneon’s previous release.
  • Discotek is releasing Hells on DVD and Blu-ray Disc, and the release will feature the original Japanese audio with an all-new subtitle translation. Discotek is collaborating with Team Four Star and Sound Cadence Studios on an English dub for the anime.
  • The company is releasing Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer, and it will have a 16:9 aspect ration preferred by director Mamoru Oshii. The release will have both Japanese audio with improved English subtitles and an English dub from the original master. The release will include director commentary and theatrical trailers.
  • Discotek is releasing the 30th Anniversary Edition of Robot Carnival on Blu-ray Disc with both Japanese audio and English subtitles and an English dub. Bonus features will include a production art gallery, behind-the-scenes notes, “storyboard to screen” videos, and a short documentary about the film.
  • Discotek will release its second collection of Lupin III: Part II with remastered video, the same as the first collection. The release will include episodes 41 to 79 and include Japanese audio with improved English subtitles and an English dub. The release will have commentaries and an interview with Richard Epcar, the English dub director and voice of Daisuke Jigen.
  • The company will first release an English-dubbed version of Lupin III: Part IV, followed by a release with Japanese audio and English subtitles. The two versions will have some different video content with scenes of different lengths and alternate animation. The English dub is based on the original Italian cut of the series. The release will include all episodes, including the two bonus episodes. The release will feature interviews with English dub directors Richard Epcar and Ellyn Stern.

FUNimation Entertainment

  • FUNimation announced that it will release the anime film based on Project Itoh’s Genocidal Organ novel on home video on November 7, 2017. The company also revealed the English dub cast and staff for the release. The cast, under ADR director Clifford Chapin, script writer Deborah Crane, mixer Nathanael Harrison CAS, and engineers Jamal Roberson and Matt Grounds, includes: Josh Grelle as Clavis, Ricco Fajardo as John Paul, Jeannie Tirado as Lucie, Ian Sinclair as Williams, Christopher R. Sabat as Rockwell, Clifford Chapin as Alex, David Wald as Lucius, and Joel McDonald as Leland.
  • The company also announced several upcoming home video releases. Kiddy Girl-and will be released as a Blu-ray and DVD combo pack on November 28, 2017. Hybrid×Heart Magias Academy Ataraxia (Masō Gakuen H×H) will be released as a Blu-ray and DVD combo pack on on November 21, 2017. Myriad Colors Phantom World will be released as a Blu-ray and DVD combo pack on November 21, 2017, with both a regular and limited edition. The Future Diary will also be released as a Blu-ray and DVD combo pack on November 21, 2017, and will include the original video anime (OVA) with the “true end.”

Nozomi Entertainment

  • Nozomi Entertainment announced during the Right Stuf panel that it has launched a Kickstarter to provide an English dub for its HD release of Aria the Animation. If funded, the dub will be recorded at Headline Studios in New York.

Right Stuf

  • Right Stuf has announced that it will release the Mobile Fighter G Gundam anime as part of its partnership with Sunrise. Mobile Fighter G Gundam, a spin-off of Mobile Suit Gundam, will ship in two sets in 2018. Right Stuf will release the series on Blu-ray Disc and DVD with English and Japanese audio and English subtitles.
  • The Mobile Suit Gundam Wing television anime series will ship as two sets on Blu-ray Disc and DVD in November 2017. Right Stuf and Sunrise will release both the original video anime (OVA) and film versions of Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz on Blu-ray Disc and DVD in December 2017. The Endless Waltz release will also include the four-part Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Operation Meteor OAV, which Right Stuf will release for the first time in North America. The releases will include both English and Japanese audio and English subtitles, but Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Operation Meteor will have only Japanese audio with English subtitles. In addition, Right Stuf will release the Mobile Suit Gundam Wing Collector’s Ultra Edition with the television series, Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Operation Meteor OAV, and OVA and film versions of Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz in December 2017. The release will include a bonus disc of video content such as the “New Mobile Report Gundam Wing: Frozen Teardrop” picture drama and cast interviews. The Ultra Edition will bundle five large art cards, five tarot cards, three posters, a five-piece metal pin set, and a 180-page art book. The art book will feature key and promotional art, mecha and character designs, staff and cast interviews, and storyboards.

Sunrise

  • Sunrise announced at its official Gundam panel that it will release the HD remastered versions of Mobile Suit Gundam Seed and Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny with new English dubs recorded at NYAV Post. The dub will have a brand new cast. The cast includes Max Mittelman as Kira, Chris Hackney as Athrun, Stephanie Sheh as Lacus, Sandy Fox as Haro, Cherami Leigh as Cagalli, Erica Mendez as Flay, Lucien Dodge as Sai, Cassandra Morris as Miriallia, Colin DePaula as Tolle, Eddy Lee as Kuzzey, Daman Mills as Yzak, Johnny Yong Bosch as Dearka, and Casey Mongillo as Nicol.

VIZ Media

  • VIZ Media announced that it has licensed Yuki Shiwasu’s Takane & Hana and Meca Tanaka’s The Young Master’s Revenge manga.
  • The company announced plans to publish Shirow Miwa’s RWBY manga in print and a hardcover edition of The Art of The Secret World of Arrietty.
  • It was also announced that VIZ Media has acquired the digital streaming, electronic sell-through, home video, and merchandise rights for the Mr. Osomatsu (Osomatsu-san) anime. The license includes the 25-episode first season and the upcoming second season.
