Akio Otsuka Is Replacing His Father as Denzou Yamada in Nintama Rantaro

Akio Ōtsuka will be replacing his late father, Chikao Ōtsuka, as the voice of Denzou Yamada in the long-running Nintama Rantarō TV anime. The series, which has been running since 1993 on NHK, is a humorous children’s show adapted from the Rakudai Ninja Rantarō manga by Sōbe Amako. It has run for over 1800 episodes.

Akio Ōtsuka is probably most famous as the Japanese voice actor for Solid Snake in the Metal Gear Solid video games, as Black Jack in the numerous Black Jack anime adaptations, and as Batou from Ghost in the Shell.

Chikao Ōtsuka had a very distinct and recognizable voice, and played such roles as Tora in Ushio & Tora, Ryuken in Fist of the North Star, and Gold Roger in One Piece. Chikao Ohtsuka passed away on January 15, 2015 at the age of 85.
