Assassination Classroom: Episode 10 – “L and R Time”

Assassination Classroom focuses on the students in Class 3-E at Kunugigaoka Junior High School, who are being taught by a powerful alien octopus creature who destroyed 70% of the moon. It’s the mission of these students to assassinate their teacher before graduation, and they are offered a reward of 10 billion yen from the Japanese government. Unfortunately, it’s not as easy as it sounds, since the alien can move at Mach 20. Also, as part of the agreement, the teacher is unable to harm the students in any way. At the end of the first episode, the teacher is given the name of “Koro Sensei” by his students.

Episode 10 includes two stories in it. The first story runs for about 14 minutes of the episode’s runtime, while the second story runs for about eight minutes. In the first story, Irina’s mentor, Lovro, appears at Class 3-E and tells her that she can’t handle the assassination job. As they argue, Koro Sensei arrives and issues the two of them a challenge: whichever one can kill Karasuma in a “sham assassination” will determine which one is the better assassin.

Most of the focus is placed on Irina’s attempts to get Karasuma, and it’s comical to see her resorting to methods that even the students can see through. Lovro tries to take Karasuma head-on, but Karasuma is able to block him. Lovro admits that if he can’t get Karasuma, there’s no way he could ever take down Koro Sensei.

But this story isn’t all humorous. We see Irina making one final attempt with Karasuma as Koro Sensei explains to Lovro just how Irina has been practicing and tackling her job of trying to kill him the same way she does as she’s trying to master a new language or master the challenge of becoming a teacher. Ultimately, this story does a decent job of trying to establish that there’s more to Irina than what we’ve seen up to this point. While this may not have been major character development for her, it’s at least a small step forward. I may not necessarily like Irina more than I did before seeing this episode, but I can at least better understand her a little more.

The second story sees Koro Sensei deciding to go to Hawaii to catch the American premiere of the sequel of the Sonic Ninja film. Nagisa and Karma ask to go with him. Ritsu also appears in Nagisa’s phone and requests to accompany them. Koro Sensei agrees, and we see him carefully transporting his students and giving them lectures and information as they travel at Mach 20.

As I watched this story, it seemed like it was just something light-hearted and comical that was tacked on just to fill out this episode. But right at the end, it’s hinted that someone new is watching in the shadows who will be transferring into Koro Sensei’s class. This new character also appears to have a major connection with the teacher. This connection and what this person is supposed to do parallels something that Koro Sensei and the others saw in the Sonic Ninja sequel film. What an interesting way to get a hint dropped for something that’s coming up.

So it appears that a new character is being added to Assassination Classroom, and that this character could truly shake things up. The connection that this upcoming character has with Koro Sensei could add an interesting new layer to the story as well as to Koro Sensei as a character. I’m looking forward to seeing how these new developments will play out in future episodes of the series.
