Log Horizon 2 is the second season of the Log Horizon television anime series. Log Horizon tells the tale of what happens when players of the MMORPG game, Elder Tale, mysteriously find themselves actually inside the game after the 12th expansion, “Novasphere Pioneers,” is added. The main character of the series is Shiroe, and he is joined by his two companions Naotsugu and Akatsuki. As the first season progressed, Shiroe helped to establish alliances between guilds by forming the Round Table, helped to introduce commerce and new ideas to the game’s world, and he even formed his own guild called Log Horizon which included many of Shiroe’s friends as its members.
Of course, not everything went smoothly. The Round Table found itself entangled in issues involving the People of the Land and the nobles, as well as taking on goblin forces that attacked and caused chaos.
We learn early on in Episode 22 that it’s been almost a year since the Apocalypse. At first, it doesn’t seem like it’s been that long. But after thinking about it, I realized that in the run of the series up to this point, it would be almost a year for them. We’ve seen them go through the fall months, Christmas, and Valentine’s Day, after all.
Episode 22 sees several pieces of information come together that starts to explain what’s been going on and potentially how the adventurers ended up in Elder Tale. First, we learn about the new monsters dubbed “Geniuses,” and how the guy named Camus who was hitting on girls in the previous episode was one of these new monsters. Most of the second half of the episode sees Shiroe talking to the older members of Log Horizon, and sharing the letter that he received from Roe 2. Shiroe confirmed my suspicion that she was some kind of alternate account of his. It turns out that she was a second character that he created on the lunar test server.
But with this letter, things take a rather strange turn. The concept of aliens coming to the moon is introduced, and how these aliens have inhabited the bodies on the test server that don’t have a soul and have brought them into Elder Tale. Roe 2 also seems to confirm that the new monsters are also from the alien race. While she doesn’t know exactly how the adventurers ended up in Elder Tale, Roe 2 suspects that if the adventurers can contact their community on the moon that her race could probably help them return home. From what we saw earlier this season when Shiroe and Akatsuki died and appeared on the moon before returning to the game, it appears that there’s truth to what Roe 2 has told them.
So does this mean that the next focus is going to be on Shiroe and the others trying to get in contact with the alien’s colony on the moon? If they manage to make it home by the end of this season, what will happen with the other unanswered questions that are still lingering?
It’s going to be interesting to watch the remaining episodes of Log Horizon 2 and see what direction it ultimately goes in. It’s just a little frustrating that so much is happening and things are just starting to come together so close to the end of the season. My hope is that the story doesn’t end up being rushed in the remaining episodes.
