Yowamushi Pedal Grande Road is the second season of the Yowamushi Pedal television anime series. It continues the adventures of the Sohoku High School bicycle club and their rivals, Hakone Academy and Kyoto Fushimi High School; specifically, this series focuses on the Inter-High race that all three teams are participating in.
Episode Six focuses on Machimiya, the captain of the team from Hiroshima’s Kureminami Technical School. Over the course of his interactions with Sohoku and Hakone Academy, he shows himself to be both a jerk and a creeper! The worst part was when he took Kinjou’s hand and rubbed it, then followed up by grabbing Fukutomi’s biceps and rubbing them. Kinjou looked disgusted but didn’t say anything, but I was glad to see Fukutomi telling Machimiya to knock it off; too bad Machimiya didn’t listen. I thought that Midousuji was creepy for the longest time, but Machimiya actually outranks Midousuji on the creepiness factor. Speaking of Midousuji, he surprises everyone by coming to the starting line with his newly shaved head. But even though Midousuji returned, there wasn’t much focus on his team once the third day of the Inter-High race started. And this makes me wonder if we’ll be seeing much from Midousuji and his team during the third day of the Inter-High.
Once the race gets going and Sohoku and Hakone Academy’s aces lead the pack, we see the remaining members of Sohoku and Hakone Academy working together in order to catch up to the aces faster. But, as it’s explained, once they do catch up, their “cease-fire” will be over. I found it amusing when Sakamichi’s brain appeared to break when this was being explained to him. I guess he couldn’t have ever imagined cooperating with Hakone Academy, or any other team, for that matter during the Inter-High.
But the most interesting part of the episode was seeing Machimiya whipping the pack up in a frenzy to get them to go faster so they can catch up with the leaders. While we’d seen the pack before, it was always as an obstacle for Sohoku to surpass in order to get back into the race during the second day of the Inter-High. But here, we get to see the actual dynamics within the pack itself. Prior to this, the dynamics in the pack really weren’t a major deal; however, with everyone feeling more desperate during the final day of the Inter-High, you see the racers being much more willing to work with riders from other teams in order to improve their chances on the third day of the race.
From the title for Episode Seven that appeared at the end, it looks like the major focus of it will be on the pack. Because of this, I suspect that there’s going to be an even bigger emphasis on the pack than there was in Episode Six.
