Chaika – The Coffin Princess – AVENGING BATTLE: Episode 5 – “The Emperor’s Fortune”

Chaika –The Coffin Princess- AVENGING BATTLE is the second season of the Chaika –The Coffin Princess- television anime series. The first series followed a girl on the run named Chaika, who claims to be the daughter of Arthur Gaz, the deposed leader of the Gaz Empire. She’s trying to gather her father’s remains in order to give him a proper burial; however, her father’s remains are a very powerful source of magic fuel so being able to gather them is no easy task. Chaika is joined by two saboteurs named Toru and Akari, as well as by a dragoon named Fredrica. It’s revealed during the first series that there are a lot of girls running around who claim to be Chaika and are trying to gather Emperor Gaz’s remains; however, the Chaika we know strongly insists that she’s the real one.

Episode Five sees the two Chaikas being taken by Viktor’s henchmen, and the two of them work together in order to escape. As they flee, Chaika sees the imprisoned girl again and frees her. The girl, who introduces herself as Niva Lada, chomps on Chaika’s finger and says the startup factor is complete. As soon as I saw this, I knew that this would somehow connect her with Chaika; while I didn’t know exactly what the connection would be, I knew it would be there.

A lot of this episode focuses on the various groups of characters as they try to escape and make their way out of hidden fortress. We also see the two demi-humans, Cyril and Ursula, join forces with the others after Viktor threatens to kill them. If it wasn’t for Cyril and Ursula, the group never would have accomplished what they needed to do in order to escape.

The episode climaxes with everyone making it to the tower where the Fayla and the demi-humans that Viktor mass produced are controlled. Chaika tries to shoot the tower down with her Gundo, but defensive magic protects it. Niva surprises Chaika with a revelation that ultimately lets her destroy the tower.

After seeing what Niva does in order to help Chaika out with destroying the control tower, I’m afraid that she may turn into a “deus ex machina” element and becomes what saves Chaika every time she seems to end up in a situation that it looks like she can’t get out of. I hope I’m wrong on that, but what I saw here leaves open that possibility. With what we saw earlier in the episode with Niva chomping on Chaika’s finger, it makes me think that Niva’s role is to protect Chaika; this would make sense, considering that Niva was originally designed by Emperor Gaz.

In this episode, we also got to see how the two Chaikas react to Viktor’s revelation about what Chaika really is. Red Chaika calls it a bunch of lies, and tells Chaika that she should decide the truth for herself. But from what we saw at the end of Episode Five, Chaika is still very confused; ultimately, her visit to the island did more to increase her doubts than to provide her any real answers.

From what I saw in the preview, it appears that the focus of Episode Six is going to be on Gillette’s squad, especially on Vivi trying to continue the work that Gillette had started. It’ll be good to see an episode focused on this group of characters again, since they had all but vanished recently. Hopefully their storyline will dovetail back into Chaika’s again before this series ends.

From what I know at this point, there’s only supposed to be 10 episodes for Chaika –The Coffin Princess- AVENGING BATTLE, which means that this episode is the halfway point. Right now, I’m not sure if this story can be wrapped up satisfactorily in five more episodes. But I won’t know until I watch through the remaining episodes of the series.
