Yowamushi Pedal Grande Road is the second season of the Yowamushi Pedal television anime series. It continues the adventures of the Sohoku High School bicycle club and their rivals, Hakone Academy and Kyoto Fushimi High School; specifically, this series focuses on the Inter-High race that all three teams are participating in.
Episode Four reveals the winner of the second day of the Inter-High: Fukutomi from Hakone Academy. We learn that Kinjou injured his knee trying to win the second day, but he’s determined to ride in the third day, even if it isn’t as the ace. Later in the episode, we see that his knee is still bothering him, and I’m almost afraid that Kinjou’s going to push himself too hard in the third day and that his knee will give out and hurt Sohoku’s chances of winning the third day.
Makishima also has to tell the first-years a painful reality about road racing: racers who can’t cross the finish line within 40 minutes of the winner are cut from the third day of the race. Sakamichi realizes that over half of the participants are going to be eliminated, and this shocks all of the first-years. I admit that this even shocked me a little, since I wasn’t aware that that was going to be part of road racing.
There’s also a great bonding moment between Sohoku’s third-years, which includes a flashback to when they were first-years on the team. It’d been a while since I last saw them looking that small, so I’d forgotten just how adorable they looked at that age. When I saw the flashback, I couldn’t help myself from thinking, “Awww…” But it also ended up being a bittersweet bonding moment for them after Kinjou pointed out that the Inter-High is their final race. So I’m wondering at this point if Yowamushi Pedal Grande Road is ultimately going to end with the conclusion of the third day of the Inter-High. Considering how long the first and second days were stretched out, it wouldn’t surprise me if that’s what happens.
We get to see Midousuji a couple more times in this episode, and he doesn’t take coming in third place very well. In fact, he declares that he’s not going to be riding in the race during the third day, which shocks his teammates. Has this declaration essentially written Midousuji out of the series at this point? Also, does this help to explain why there will be a new team being focused on during this series, as seen in both the opening and ending credits?
I’m looking forward to seeing how Yowamushi Pedal Grande Road handles the third day of the Inter-High, as well as getting to meet and learn about this new team that’s supposed to become a part of the story during this series.
