Yowamushi Pedal Grande Road is the second season of the Yowamushi Pedal television anime series. It continues the adventures of the Sohoku High School bicycle club and their rivals, Hakone Academy and Kyoto Fushimi High School; specifically, this series focuses on the Inter-High race that all three teams are participating in.
Episode Two continues the race to the finish line for the second day of the race. It’s during this episode that the aces pull away from their assistants and head for the finish line. Midousuji pulls ahead early and surprises both Kinjou and Fukutomi.
This episode proves just how freaky and gross Midousuji can be. First off, when he breaks off and establishes a four second distance between himself and the other two, he does it in such a way that it defies the laws of physics much more than the other races in the series had up to this point. Seriously, how did Midousuji manage to get himself back up after he was leaning so far down toward the road that he was scraping up his chin?
After this, though, the remainder of the episode basically focuses on Kinjou and Fukutomi and the rivalry they had developed after the previous year’s Inter-High Race. I appreciated seeing the flashback sequences about what happened then, because it served as a great reminder to the audience as to what had happened and why these two characters are acting the way they do. It’s been several months since we saw these flashbacks the first time during the first season of Yowamushi Pedal, so the visual reminder was very much appreciated.
I was rooting for the two of them to be able to surpass Midousuji. While we see them catching up to him, neither one surpasses him by the end of this episode. In fact, the second day of the race still hasn’t ended at the end of Episode Two; the episode ends with 300 meters remaining until the finish line.
I’ve seen enough episodes of Yowamushi Pedal to expect this kind of pacing when it comes to the races, so the pacing here doesn’t bother me at all. I’m going to predict that Episode Three will be focusing on these final 300 meters, and maybe the second day of the Inter-High might also end by the end of the next episode. I’m not willing to declare that the second day will definitely end in Episode Three, but I’m willing to say that it might.
This episode also saw Shunsuke wrestling with both his doubts and his hopes as he was leading Kinjou; the doubts surface when Midousuji suddenly pulls ahead. There’s a great scene here where Shunsuke feels defeated, but Kinjou gives him words of encouragement. It’s scenes like this that demonstrate just how effective of a captain that Kinjou is. You can’t help but like Kinjou after seeing him interacting with his team this way.
Yowamushi Pedal Grande Road continues the storytelling and action that the audience has come to expect from this story, and this season has continued to be an enjoyable viewing experience. I’m looking forward to Episode Three to find out how this race will ultimately continue.
