Box Office Mojo is estimating that Studio Ghibli and Isao Takahata’s The Tale of the Princess Kaguya anime film has earned an opening weekend gross of US$51,700 in North America. The film opened at the IFC Center in New York City, ArcLight Hollywood in Los Angeles, and TIFF Bell Lightbox in Toronto. It had a per-screen average of US$17,233, which is the third highest of the weekend.
The film will be shown in these three theaters until at least October 23, 2014. It will then open in multiple other North American theaters over the next few weeks.
