Free! Eternal Summer is the second season of the Free! Iwatobi Swim Club television anime series. This season begins in spring, when the new school year is getting underway. The focus of the series is still on the Iwatobi High swimmers (Haruka, Makoto, Nagisa, and Rei), their manager Gou, and Rin from Samezuka Academy.
Episode 13 sees Rin and Haruka returning from Australia, and Haruka making amends with his teammates before nationals. He spells out to them what his feelings had been prior to going to Australia, and how going there ultimately helped him to find his dream.
There’s quite an emotional scene that takes place between the members of the Iwatobi team the night before the competition. As they reminisce about how the club started and getting to where they are now, Nagisa gets excited and can’t wait to do it again next year. After Rei reminds Nagisa that Haruka and Makoto will be retired from the club after nationals, both of the underclassmen start crying. I loved how Makoto stepped in like a father figure to calm the two of them down.
Then we see the Iwatobi team participate in the relay at nationals. As each member swims their portion of the relay, they seem to see visions of various sea and animal life in the pool and these vision seem to push them onward in the relay. While I believe I understand what the director was going for by doing this, it still comes across as a little odd. Unfortunately, visions of sea and animal life don’t lead the Iwatobi team to victory.
The remainder of the episode shows what happens to the various characters after nationals, with the ending credits showing what happens to them all during the next school year. Right at the very end of the episode, we see Rin and Haruka competing against each other in what appears to be some kind of professional swim meet.
With the montage that’s shown during the ending credits that reveals what happens to everyone the following school year, it leads me to believe that there more than likely won’t be another season of the Free! anime. While I do enjoy this series quite a bit, I really can’t see where they could take the story, especially with Makoto and Haruka no longer being on the school’s swim team. It just wouldn’t be the same without all four of them.
In the end, I enjoyed Free! Eternal Summer just as much as I enjoyed watching Free! – Iwatobi Swim Club. I’d like to add this series to my home anime video collection, but I’m hoping that someone will pick up the North American license for the first season of Free! I’d have a hard time buying the second season when the first season isn’t available as well.
