Chaika – The Coffin Princess is set on the continent of Verbist. Five years prior to the beginning of the series, Arthur Gaz of the Gaz Empire has fallen, and his daughter Chaika has escaped and is on the run. In the first episode, a saboteur named Toru meets Chaika, who can use magic and goes around with a coffin on her back. Toru, along with his younger sister, Akari, travel with Chaika as she tries to gather the remains of her father, Arthur Gaz.
Episode 10 sees Toru and Chaika in a town trying to get the fuel they need. As they walk, Toru notices that everyone on the street is staring at Chaika; after a little bit, he realizes that everyone he sees are men. When they go to a store to buy some fossil fuel for the Gundo, Chaika is surprised at how little she’s able to get. The shopkeeper says that due to how much fossil fuel Lord Gavarni insists on being given, he doesn’t have much to sell to the public. They also learn from the shopkeeper that Lord Gavarni has armed men come and take the young women by force to his mansion and they’re never seen again. They also learn the mansion is a flying fortress.
Toru has to bargain with Fredrica to allow them to ride her up to the mansion in her dragoon form in order to check it out. When they investigate, they find there’s no easy way in, and Chaika can also sense that some of her father’s remains are inside.
Akari disguises herself in a cloak and volunteers to be taken by Gavarni’s men the next time they come to take young women to the mansion so she can infiltrate it. We later learn that Vivi and Zita, two of the women who work for Gillette, have also infiltrated. Toru, Chaika, and Fredrica join Akari later, but they’re discovered and are attacked. Fredrica is knocked down, and Akari is separated from Toru and Chaika. Everyone who has infiltrated is trying to get to the control room…
There’s also bad news for Vivi and Zita, because the allied nations have decided to launch an attack on the flying fortress the next day; they now have to try to find a way to escape before the attack starts.
This storyline will definitely be continuing in Episode 11, and with some of the elements that have been introduced, it could be very interesting and very intense.
This episode also introduces Lord Gavarni’s son, Ricardo. Wow, this kid is really twisted… he makes it clear that he’s a serial killer who has no qualms about who he kills in order to satiate his hobby of dissecting people when he says he even killed his own family members. Grad Lancia is the wizard who works with Ricardo. For some reason, I have a suspicion that at some point in this storyline, Grad is going to end up turning on Ricardo. I just don’t trust Grad with his mannerisms and the character design that he’s been given.
At the end of the episode, Akari, Toru, and Chaika find themselves in some challenging situations, so it makes me want to see Episode 11 in order to find out what’s going to happen to them and how they’ll be able to overcome these situations.
