Chaika – The Coffin Princess: Episode 8 – “Empire of Consolation”

Chaika – The Coffin Princess is set on the continent of Verbist. Five years prior to the beginning of the series, Arthur Gaz of the Gaz Empire had fallen, and his daughter Chaika escaped and is on the run. In the first episode, a saboteur named Toru meets Chaika, who can use magic and goes around with a coffin on her back. Toru, along with his younger sister, Akari, travel with Chaika as she tries to gather the remains of her father, Arthur Gaz.

Episode Eight sees Chaika and the others traveling on a back road, and they end up being stopped by a group of people claiming they need to pay a toll, because the land belongs to the Neo Gaz Empire. It’s then explained that they are a group of people working to restore the Gaz Empire with his orphaned daughter, Princess Chaika. A girl with blond hair and yellow dress emerges, and they are told that she is Chaika. Toru keeps Chaika from revealing who she is, while Akari says they are traveling entertainers. They are told they need to prove that they’re entertainers.

They pull off a show, using Chaika’s magic and Fredrica’s ability to transform from a cat into a dragoon. The Neo Gaz Empire group is impressed by what they see. However, it becomes apparent as they spend time with the group that things aren’t what they seem. Also, yellow Chaika has white Chaika make a promise to stay so yellow Chaika can teach her a poem. It turns out that yellow Chaika isn’t what she seems, either, and Toru and the others find themselves in the middle of a situation.

This episode also sees Gillette trying to find more information on Emperor Gaz and on Chaika, but not having any luck. It’s suggested to him to take a break from the investigation, but he refuses to listen.

With this episode, it really had me thinking for a while that there really was a third Chaika being added to the mix, and I was starting to wonder how many different colors of Chaikas would be appearing in this series. However, it’s made really clear in the episode that yellow Chaika isn’t truly a Chaika at all. So that still just leaves us with white Chaika and red Chaika. I wonder how long it will be until red Chaika makes another appearance.

At first, Gillette’s scenes didn’t seem to add much of anything, but during the last scene he appears in, it ends up making a connection to wha’’s going on with Toru and the others.

Even though the Neo Gaz Empire group wasn’t entirely what it claimed, they still do seem to be sympathizers of Emperor Gaz. I’m wondering if these characters will show up again at some point, because they could become potential allies for Chaika. However, they do hint there’s something that they have to do now that the truth has been discovered, so they may or may not be able to help Chaika out in the future.

Chaika – The Coffin Princess continues to keep me interested in its story week after week, and it’s been a nice change of pace every Thursday after sitting through Kanojo ga Flag wo Oraretara.

Coffin Princess Chaika’s my favorite show this season. After all, it’s set in the same universe as one of my top shows: Scrapped Princess. So far, it’s not as good as the other show, but very entertaining nevertheless. I miss the characters being named after firearms: Winnia Chester, the Casulls, Christopher Armalite, Parabellum, etc. Names of cars seem more commonplace.
