Haikyu!! focuses on two first-year high school volleyball players named Shoyo Hinata and Kageyama Tobio. The previous year they had competed against each other in a junior high tournament, and Shoyo decides to become Kageyama’s rival. The two boys come from very different volleyball backgrounds: while Kageyama was part of Kitagawa Daiichi’s team and is a self-centered setter, while Shoyo spend most of junior high practicing being a spiker by himself because his school didn’t have a team until his last year. On the first day of high school, Shoyo and Kageyama are surprised to see that they’re both at Karasuno High School.
Episode Six sees the players from Karasuno arriving at Aoba Johsai for the practice match. Kindaichi, one of the players for Aoba Johsai, was one of Kageyama’s teammates from junior high; as expected, Kindaichi doesn’t have a high opinion of him and talks badly about Kageyama.
Shoyo, meanwhile, is nervous about the match. Daichi tries to do everything he can to get him to calm down. Unfortunately, Shoyo’s nervousness affects his performance during the first set; he’s bumping into people and causing issues. When it’s Shoyo’s turn to serve, he messes up and hits Kageyama on the back of the head. Not only that, it also gives Aoba Johsai the final point they need to win the first set.
At the end of the set, Kageyama goes over to talk to Shoyo; however, instead of yelling, he tells Shoyo that hitting him on the back of the head was the scariest thing he could do and that now that he’s done it, he doesn’t have to be nervous anymore. Between this and a talk from Tanaka, Shoyo is able to regain his composure for the second set. Karasuno manages to turn things around and win the second set. The episode ends with it being stated that there’s still a third set to play in order to determine the winner of the practice match. Unfortunately, a change to Aoba Johsai’s team could affect Karasuno’s chances of winning…
As I expected, the first set ended up being rough for Karasuno because of Shoyo and his nervousness. I really liked how Kageyama’s attitude toward Shoyo at the end of the first set surprised his former junior high teammates. Not only that, but the quick attacks that Kageyama set up for Shoyo also surprised them. It really made me smile to see the oh-so-confident Aoba Johsai team starting to get nervous as they saw Kageyama and Shoyo’s quick attacks. It’s definitely nice to see the underdog team doing a lot better than others expected them to.
So Episode Seven will continue this practice match, and I’m curious to see how the change to Aoba Johsai’s team ends up affecting the third set of the match. I’ve been enjoying Haikyu!! quite a bit and look forward to watching it week after week.
