Kanojo ga Flag wo Oraretara focuses on a boy named Sota Hatate, who has an ability to see flags over people’s heads and know how they’re feeling or what will happen to them; he also knows what he needs to do to break the flag over someone’s head. In the first episode, he meets Nanami and Akane at Hatagaya Academy. At the end of the first episode, Sota sees a death flag over Akane’s head; however, he’s unable to make it break. He decides he has to change the flag, so he kisses her to change it to a conquest flag. The stage is set for the beginning of a harem. In Episode Two, Sota’s old friend Okiku returns, and becomes the “big sister” type for his harem. A boy named Megumu is also introduced, but he’s constantly mistaken for a girl because of how he looks.
Episode Five sees most of the residents of Quest Dorm becoming upset with Sota because he agreed to go out with Akane sometime after the Track Meet Week. All of the others, except for Nanami and Ruri, say that they deserve to go out with him, too, because they put in as much time into the track meet as Akane.
One day, he goes on several “dates.” During the date with Megumu, Sota discovers that he is able to see a flag above the head of a teddy bear in a claw machine that Megumu wants. The date with Akane ultimately leads them to going to the library where Akane and a girl she had become friends with had met. The date with Rin provides a flashback to their childhood, as does the time he spends with Okiku.
The most important part of the episode takes place near the end, when Ruri tells Sota that she discovered the underground passageway for the first gate. She mentions that it was buried, but that she dug it again. The two of them go into the passageway and find the first gate. When they open the door, they see several things, including a blinding light from the area that leads to the forest behind Quest Dorm. When Sota goes to investigate, he finds a girl who chides him for messing with the world’s flags…
For the most part, a lot of the episode felt like fluff with some occasional important bit thrown it. Seeing the flag over the teddy bear’s head was important, but seeing Megumu and Sota eating parfaits together wasn’t. The two dates with the flashbacks were only really worth it for the flashback portion. But for the most part, the dates made the episode feel like it was sliding back more toward typical harem territory again.
I really find the character of Megumu to be obnoxious and not adding a whole lot to the story. The Megumu being mistaken for a girl gag showed up at least two or three times in this episode, and in most cases, Megumu really brought it on himself because of insisting on going on a date with Sota.
My favorite part of the episode was at the end, when he finds the girl where the blinding light was, because it made me ask questions. Who is she? What world is she talking about? How exactly did Sota end up with the ability to manipulate flags? Hopefully future episodes will answer these questions. Unfortunately, from seeing the preview for the next episode, it looks like it’s going to be this anime’s token beach episode; because of that, I don’t expect much progress in regards to the overarching story.
I’ll keep going with Kanojo ga Flag wo Oraretara, although I’m at a point where I really don’t expect much out of it each week.
