Chaika – The Coffin Princess is set on the continent of Verbist. Five years prior to the beginning of the series, Arthur Gaz of the Gaz Empire has fallen, and his daughter Chaika has escaped and is on the run. In the first episode, a saboteur named Toru meets Chaika, who can use magic and goes around with a coffin on her back. Toru, along with his younger sister, Akari, travel with Chaika as she tries to gather the remains of her father, Arthur Gaz.
Episode Four opens with Dominica Scoda saving Chaika, Toru, and Akari from the Orthros. She invites them to stay at her mansion in order to be out of the forest before the Orthros return. When they get to the mansion, Dominica asks what the kids’ connection is, and Akari spins a tale of her and her brother falling into unforgivable, forbidden love, and that they were in the forest to escape their pursuers. Chaika learns that while Toru and Akari are siblings, it’s not by blood; they just grew up together.
The three of them explore the mansion and find that there’s no one else around except for a cat, the place doesn’t look like it’s been used for a while, and there’s also a lot of artwork of Dominica. They also find a magic projector that projects Dominica’s image.
Chaika is torn about trying to acquire her father’s remains from Dominica, because she was the one who saved them and has been hospitable. Toru says he’ll ask her upfront to give the remains, but if she resists, they’ll take them by force.
The next day, Toru starts asking Dominica questions about her being a dragoon cavalier, where the dragoon is, and if she’s one of the eight heroes and has any of Gaz’s remains. When Dominica says she has the remains, Toru asks for her to give them to him. When she asks why he wants them, he says he wants to fulfill the objective of someone precious to him. Dominica pulls a sword and says that if he wants them, he’ll have to defeat her and take them.
Later, Toru and Akari fight with Dominica. As they fight, Toru comes the realization that Dominica isn’t what she appears to be…
I have to admit that while I didn’t pick up on it right at first, I did figure out before the characters that Dominica wasn’t what she appeared to be. However, I didn’t figure out everything that was off with her. What we end up learning is that Dominica died of illness after the war ended. Her dragoon has been taking several forms since her death, which includes the form of Dominica. We learn the dragoon’s name is Frederica, and she ends up traveling with the others at the end of the episode in the guise of the cat.
So we have a new character traveling with us, and the new member of the party is someone who has made it her goal to kill Toru. This will definitely add a new element to the series. So not only do we have Chaika and the others trying to find her father’s remains and being pursued by Gillette and his forces, they are now traveling with someone who wants to kill a member of their party.
I’m looking forward to seeing Episode Five to see how the story will progress from here.
