Chaika – The Coffin Princess: Episode 2 – “The Lazy Man’s Choice”

Chaika – The Coffin Princess is set on the continent of Verbist. Five years prior to the beginning of the series, Arthur Gaz of the Gaz Empire has fallen, and his daughter Chaika has escaped and is on the run. In the first episode, a saboteur named Toru meets Chaika, who can use magic and goes around with a coffin on her back. Chaika hires Toru and his sister Akari to help her retrieve something important from Count Abarth’s mansion.

At the beginning of Episode Two, Chaika, Toru and Akari are found by Count Abarth after they sneak into his mansion. It turns out he is able to use magic, but the count is surprised to see Chaika; he thought he had killed Chaika five years ago. Chaika tells Toru and Akari that the mansion is Abarth’s Gundo through a magic object in the center of the building; this is what allows the count to perform magic. Toru formulates a plan for him to distract Count Abarth while Akari and Chaika look for the Gundo.

As Toru and Count Abarth battle, Chaika and Akari manage to find where the Gundo is hidden. Chaika uses her magic to remove a barrier on a hidden cabinet, and inside finds the Gundo; this turns out to also be the important object that Chaika hired Toru and Akari to get for her in the first place. It’s a severed hand that’s preserved in a canister. When they remove the canister, Count Abarth is no longer able to use his magic, and Toru is able to catch him in a trap.

After the three of them escape with the hand, they are cornered by Alberic Gillette and his attendants. There’s a spectacular chase scene here, where Gillette’s attendants chase after Toru after he takes the hand from Chaika. It ends with Toru, Akari, and Chaika being cornered and Gillette telling Toru the truth about who Chaika is and about the hand.

After escaping from Gillette and his attendants, Toru and Akari decide to accompany Chaika, because they can no longer stay in that town because they’ve been seen by both parties. We also learn that Chaika wants to gather her father’s remains so she can give him a funeral.

In my writeup for Episode One, I had complained a little about Chaika’s speech patterns. While she may still speak in small phrases, she has started to say four words in a sentence in addition to the one to three word phrases we saw her saying in the previous episode.

This episode, in conjunction with Episode One, have done a good job establishing the main characters, their world, and the story that they’re a part of. At this point, the setup seems to be that Chaika, Toru, and Akari will travel around trying to find what else is left of Arthur Gaz’s remains, and that they will be pursued by Alberic Gillette and the others in his group.

After two episodes, Chaika – The Coffin Princess still seems to be showing promise. I’ll keep going with it and see whether or not the promise I’m seeing will actually manifest itself over the course of the series.
