Anime News Network is reporting that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in the United States has discovered the oldest known surviving anime short by director Kon Ichikawa. “Yowamushi Chinsengumi” is a five-minute animated short dating back to 1935.

This short is the third Hana Yori Dango about Dangonosuke the samurai boy.

Prior to this discovery, it was thought that a 1936 Hana Yori Dango short was the oldest surviving animated work by Ichikawa.
