Kanojo ga Flag wo Oraretara: Episode 1 – “I’m Going to Marry Her Once I Leave This School”

Kanojo ga Flag wo Oraretara is an anime based on a light novel written by Toka Takei and illustrated by Cuteg. The series is produced by Hoods Entertainment, and is directed by Ayumu Watanabe. As of this writing, Crunchyroll holds the North American streaming rights for the series, and NIS America holds the North American home video rights.

Episode One begins with a girl named Nanami Knight Bladefield heading on her way to school at Hatagaya Academy. A traffic accident happens near her, and just when it looks like a truck’s going to hit her and the other pedestrians on the sidewalk, she sees a mysterious boy saying something to someone nearby, and the truck misses them.

Nanami is troubled by what she saw, and realizes the boy was wearing a Hatagaya Academy uniform. Her teacher announces that they have a new transfer student named Sota Hatate, and it turns out he’s the boy she saw at the time of the accident. In class, Sota has some people approach him and asking him things, and he shoots them down. Nanami watches all of this intensely, and then tells Sota that she wants to talk to him.

They go up on the school roof, and Nanami starts questioning Sota about what happened. When he tries to get out of saying anything, she points out that she noticed him looking above people’s heads and making a decision based on what he saw. He tells her that he can see “flags” over people’s heads, and how they look have specific meanings. Not only can Sota see these flags, he knows what he has to do to destroy them. Sota also tells Nanami that she needs to stay away from him because he brings misfortune to other people. Nanami, however, refuses to heed what he says.

At lunch, Sota and Nanami sit together outside, but they don’t face each other. A girl named Akane Mahougasawa approaches and asks to have lunch with them. Sota sees a friendship flag above her, and he shoots her down. However, Akane is persistent, and her friendship flag keeps returning every time Sota tries to shoot her down. He gives up after a while. He also learns that Akane is the heir to the owner of the Mahougasawa Group, and that Nanami is the 13th princess of a small country in Europe called the Principality of Bladefield.

After school, Akane insists on going to Sota’s house. He tries to shoot her down again but fails, so he takes Akane and Nanami to the Quest Dorm. This turns out to be a dilapidated and unsafe looking building. While they’re there, Akane tells Nanami about an incident that happened in her childhood, and shows a barrette that’s part of that incident. When it’s time to go, Akane realizes she left the barrette in Sota’s room, and goes back up to get it. As she does, Sota sees a death flag appear above her head. It’s up to Sota to try to figure out how to get rid of the death flag…

As I watched the first episode of the series, I found myself thinking that there was an interesting concept that was drawing me into what I was seeing. So far, I’ve really enjoyed the interactions between Sota, Nanami, and Akane. I found myself chuckling at some of the humor, and I was left with the impression that Kanojo ga Flag wo Oraretara was a cute show that shows a lot of promise.

From what I saw in the ending credits, it looks like this series could see Sota acquiring a harem of girls, with Nanami and Akane being the first two members of the harem. If this turns out to have a harem element, I hope the series can continue to be as enjoying and promising as what I saw in this first episode.
