Yowamushi Pedal: Episode 26 – “I Can See The Sky”

Yowamushi Pedal is an anime about a first-year high school student named Sakamichi Onoda who is an otaku that wants to join his high school’s anime club, but it has shut down due to lack of members. Sakamichi’s goal is to try to revive the anime club. He also rides a “mommy” bike, and is able to ride it very well. After losing in a bicycle race to Shunsuke, Shunsuke tells him to think about joining the bicycle racing club, because he sees that Sakamichi has potential. In episode four, Sakamichi became friends with a boy named Naruko that he met while he was in Akihibara. After some convincing from Naruko, Sakamichi joins the bicycle racing club.

At the beginning of the episode, we see that Sohoku gets to move to the front of the pack because of their team members was in first place at the first checkpoint. The Sohoku team’s spirit is very high.

Past the checkpoint, Tadokoro ends up talking with Izumida about how he ultimately ended up losing. After this conversation, Izumida gets rather emotional and apologizes to his abs, Andy and Frank.

The sprinters return to the pack, so they can work on resting their legs. The next part of the race takes them through town and by the feed zone, and then it’s on to the mountains. Toudou, one of the climbers for Hakone, comes over to Makishima and Sakamichi and acts like a real jerk. After Toudou returns to his spot in the pack, Kinjou tells the team what he wants them to do for the mountain portion of the course. Makishima is given the job of trying to beat the other climbers, and Sakamichi is given the job of riding in front and pulling the team along.

When they enter town, Sakamichi becomes separated from the others, and ends up being part of a group that crashes after someone in the back of the pack crashes on a sharp turn leading into town.

The majority of Episode 26 focuses on the aftermath of the sprinters’ race to the first checkpoint and the buildup to the upcoming mountain portion of the race course. The episode also gave the audience an opportunity to get to see Toudou interacting more with others outside of Hakone, especially with someone he’s never met before when we see him interacting with Sakamichi. I thought Toudou was annoying before, but after his interactions with Sakamichi, I thought he was a real jerk.

I hadn’t anticipated the complication that arose at the end of the episode, when Sakamichi finds himself entangled in the crash. And because of getting caught up in the crash, it now leaves the question of whether or not Sakamichi can somehow miraculously catch back up with the rest of his team and fulfill the job that Kinjou had assigned for him. Normally, I would say that there’s no way Sakamichi can pull off a miracle, but after some of the things I’ve seen him do in this show, I’ve have to start taking the stance of “never say never.”

I’m now very curious to see Episode 27 and hopefully find out whether or not Sakamichi can pull off another miracle, as well as how the mountain portion of the race will go.
