Noragami is about a minor god named Yato, who doesn’t have a single shrine. One day, he spray paints on a wall that he will help people in exchange for a 5-yen offering; he’s trying to save up money in order to build his own shrine. One day, while he’s doing a job, a girl named Hiyori pushes him out of the way of a bus. She is hit by the bus, and now Hiyori is a living Phantom. She’s still alive, but her spirit has a tendency to separate itself from her body at unexpected times. At the end of episode two, Yato gets a new Regalia named Yukine.
Yato, Yukine, and Hiyori go to see Tenjin so Yato can thank for him allowing them to borrow Mayu for the ablution. During their visit, Mayu takes Yukine and Hiyori aside, and Mayu tells Yukine that he needs to swear to protect Yato from now on. Yukine agrees. Meanwhile, Yato admits to Tenjin that he hasn’t done anything to help Hiyori with her problem because he has no clue how to help her. Tenjin suggests that he should try cutting his connection to her as a test and see if perhaps the problem will go away after that.
Hiyori and her friends have big exams coming up after the new year, and they decide they need to pick a shrine to pray at. During this conversation, Hiyori’s friends tell her about a god they’ve been hearing a lot about named Lord Rabo. Apparently, if someone tells him the name of someone they want gone, he really will make them disappear. Hiyori also sees a report on the news about a Serial Street Slasher who attacks in plain sight, but has yet to be found.
On New Year’s, Hiyori and her friends go to Tenjin’s shrine, and she has invited Yato and Yukine to join them. Yato and Yukine are in the middle of a job, but say they’ll be there. During the festival, Hiyori sees someone who looks like Yato from the back and pursues; unfortunately, her spirit chooses that exact moment to leave her body. Instead of finding Yato, she finds Nora. Nora has called her Masked Ones, which look like wolves with masks like hers, and they try to attack Hiyori. The rising sun manages to save Hiyori from the Masked Ones, but Nora comes up to her and does something unexpected.
Meanwhile, Yato and Yukine are delayed when they are attacked by a number of Phantoms. Unknown to them, they’re being tested by Lord Rabo.
I was glad to see Yukine has reformed and is starting to redeem himself. He may still argue with Yato from time to time, but it’s no longer infused with the anger and hostility we had seen prior to the ablution.
I should have known that the reason Yato had been holding off on helping Hiyori was due to the fact that he had no clue what to do. As soon as he told Tenjin that, I thought to myself that I really should have seen that one coming.
I almost forgot to mention that something major happens at the end of this episode that will have a major ramification for the remaining two episodes of the series. Not only that, but the tone of the storytelling and the content in the episodes at this point in the series also makes it clear that the end of the series is just around the corner.
With only two episodes left, I’m almost afraid that the series is not going to end satisfactorily. It just seems like there’s still a little too much in the way of loose threads for all of them to be able to be wrapped up in just two episodes. I really hope I’m wrong with my fear, though. I’ll definitely be watching the remaining episodes to see how it ultimately ends up going.
