Log Horizon is an anime that tells the tale of what happens when players of the MMORPG game, Elder Tale, mysteriously find themselves actually inside the game after the 12th expansion, “Novasphere Pioneers,” is added. The main character of the series is Shiroe, and he is joined by his two companions Naotsugu and Akatsuki. As the series progresses, they are joined by other characters as they figure out how to live within the world of the game.
At the beginning of the episode, we learn that a month has passed since the goblin army was pinned on the Zantleaf Peninsula. We also learn that while the goblin general has been defeated, the Goblin King is still alive. At this point, Shiroe has decided it’s more important to build relationships with the People of the Land. During the month that was skipped over in the series, the Round Table has signed basic trade and peace treaties with Eastal’s League of Freedom Cities. However, during the party, we hear some of the People of the Land spreading some rumors about Shiroe, which shows that they haven’t entirely warmed up to Shiroe and the other adventurers.
Quite a bit of the episode takes place at a celebration ball to celebrate Crusty’s defeat of the goblin general. And since this was what was focused on in the episode preview that appeared at the end of episode 20, I assumed this was going to simply be a more light-hearted episode.
However, some important information is revealed in this episode that shows the audience that there’s still more going on. It starts when Shiroe is walking around the party, and hears a woman tell a story to a group of kids. As he listens, he realizes that it sounds a lot like what he did to bring Rudy back to life in episode 20.
Between hearing this story and receiving information that the Demon Festival of Suzaku Gate has taken place in the west, Shiroe goes to see Regan. Regan congratulates Shiroe on creating a new type of magic, which he learned about when he sensed a magic unknown to him in the east. He also tells Shiroe that he has also just recently felt a powerful magic in the western sky. They deduce it would have to have happened in Minami. Shiroe believes that something must be taking place in Minami, but hasn’t deduced what exactly it is yet.
We also learn that Princess Lenessia will be serving as an ambassador between Maihama and Akihabara. She arrives in Akihabara at the end of the episode to take on her new duties. Autumn then comes, and Marielle has decided she wants to put on a festival. Are we shaping up to have a festival episode for Log Horizon?
During the party, we learn that Isuzu will be leaving the Crescent Moon Guild and joining Log Horizon. Why am I not surprised that she ended up following Rudy?
So from what was learned from Regan, I suspect the next story arc will be focusing on whatever’s taking place in Minami, and that it will be intercut with the festival that Marielle wants to have. With how few episodes are left, I suspect that the Minami arc will be the final one of the series. If I’m right, that means that there really won’t be any episodes left to tackle the issue of how the adventurers are able to return to the real world.
I have a hard time believing that Log Horizon is getting closer to ending. I’ve really looked forward to watching this series every week, and I’ll definitely miss it when it’s over.
