Strike the Blood is set on Itogami Island, and it’s known as the Demon District because it’s the home of various magical beings who have been authorized by the government to live there for protection and research purposes. The main character of the series is Kojou Akatsuki; three months prior to the start of the series, he became the Fourth Progenitor, which has given him vampiric powers. A girl named Yukina Himeragi has been given a mission by the Lion King Organization to observe Kojou, and if she deems him to be dangerous, she has been ordered to kill him.
In episode 18, Aya Tokoyogi used the Dark Oath Grimoire to negate all superhuman powers in the demon district except for hers. She also has taken Yukina with her. While with Aya, Yukina enters in a dream world where at first, she witnesses the confrontation Aya and Natsuki had 10 years earlier. From there, she’s taken to what could be an alternate reality. When Aya offers to make that alternate reality Yukina’s new reality, she rejects it. Aya also reveals something about the Schneesturm Wolfin that Yukina is able to use later in the episode to turn the tide.
Kojou, meanwhile, is unable to heal a wound he received, since his regenerative power has been negated by the Dark Oath Grimoire. Yuuma, who has fled from Kojou’s mother’s lab, arrives. With the power of her blood, followed by the power of Sayaka’s blood, Kojou is able to use his magic again. Kojou, along with Yukina and a bit of surprise help from someone else, fight against Aya Tokoyogi.
The part with Yuuma and Sayaka trying to help Kojou regain his vampiric powers was definitely on the “fanservice” side of things, but it’s not as if Strike the Blood is heavy on the fanservice overall.. In fact, it seemed like there really hadn’t been any for about two or three episodes at least, so I didn’t mind that much that this scene had a bit more in the way of that. For how Kojou’s vampiric urges work, the fanservice made sense to include.
During the battle with Aya, something unexpected happens. It seems like a new character has been introduced, and is familiar with Natsuki. However, the scene is rather dark, and it was hard for me to make out much of anything on the small screen that I have on Crunchyroll. I’m wondering if this is going to be something to establish the next story arc for the series.
After the end of the main story, a rather important event happens in regards to Yukina and Kojou. Considering what happens, I’m surprised that some of the other potential love interests for Kojou take it as well as they do.
And now that this particular story arc has come to an end, I’m wondering how the series will progress from this point until it reaches its conclusion in a few more episodes. Like I stated earlier, I wonder if the person who suddenly appeared during the battle with Aya will play some kind of a role for the next story arc.
At 19 episodes in, Strike the Blood is still keeping my interest, and I look forward to seeing how the series unfolds week after week.
