Log Horizon: Episode 20 – “Contract…”

Log Horizon is an anime that tells the tale of what happens when players of the MMORPG game, Elder Tale, mysteriously find themselves actually inside the game after the 12th expansion, “Novasphere Pioneers,” is added. The main character of the series is Shiroe, and he is joined by his two companions Naotsugu and Akatsuki. As the series progresses, they are joined by other characters as they figure out how to live within the world of the game.

After receiving a call of help from Minori, Shiroe leaves Karashin in charge so he and Akatsuki can go to Minori’s aid. After getting on his griffon and being briefed about the situation with Rudy telepathically, he gives them instructions on what they need to do until he gets there. After the conversation, Shiroe suddenly has Akatsuki take the reins and he starts writing something with his scribe ability.

When Shiroe reaches them, he has Minori add him to their party. He then uses mana-channeling, which absorbs MP from all party members and returns it equally. While Rudy may be warm, have a pulse, and his MP is active, he still will not awaken. Shiroe uses revival incense, which will turn him into a zombie for three minutes and forcibly connect his mind and body. When Rudy awakens, Shiroe offers Rudy a contract: become a member of the Log Horizon guild and you will become a true adventurer. When Rudy decides to sign the contract, he has a hard time holding the pen. Isuzu offers to help him hold the pen. After Rudy finishes signing the contract, he has to die and be revived in the Cathedral.

Meanwhile, Lenessia goes to see Crusty when he’s being briefed on how the battle’s going. She’s surprised to see him without his glasses and shirt on as he cleans himself up from the battle. However, while they’re talking about the creatures that will be encountered in the next battle, Crusty has a rather bloodthirsty look to him. While we saw a little bit of this bloodthirsty look to him in episode 19, it was more prevalent in episode 20.

There were a couple of things that stood out to me in this episode. The first one was the scene where Lenessia saw Crusty. I have to admit that without the glasses and shirt on, Crusty actually looks kind of hot. Is it wrong for me to think that about a character from an animated series?

The other scene that really stood to me was the final scene, when Rudy revives in the Cathedral and discovers that he is now a true adventurer. Isuzu uses a return spell to go to the Cathedral, and she’s not happy with Rudy. In fact, she keeps hitting him on the head several times as he tries to apologize for acting rashly. With how Isuzu keeps seeing him as a dog, I guess I shouldn’t have been too surprised when she asked him to put his paw in her hand. By the end of the scene, Isuzu basically has him like a dog on a leash. When I watched the ending credits and saw the shot of Isuzu walking past Akatsuki with Rudy dutifully following behind her carrying a bunch of stuff, I was like, “Yep, she’s definitely got him like a dog on a short leash.”

From seeing the preview for episode 21, it looks like the battles we’ve been seeing for the past few episodes will be coming to an end. In fact, it appears it’s going to be a celebration for succeeding in their mission. After the celebration, there’s still supposed to be four more episodes left in the series. I wonder if those final four episodes may focus on the adventurers trying to find their way back home to the real world, or if they’ll focus on something else.
