Noragami: Episode 6 – “Scary Person”

Noragami is about a minor god named Yato, who doesn’t have a single shrine. One day, he spray paints on a wall that he will help people in exchange for a 5-yen offering; he’s trying to save up money in order to build his own shrine. One day, while he’s doing a job, a girl named Hiyori pushes him out of the way of a bus. She is hit by the bus, and now Hiyori is a living Phantom. She’s still alive, but her spirit has a tendency to separate itself from her body at unexpected times. At the end of episode two, Yato gets a new Regalia named Yukine.

At the beginning of episode six, Yukine starts freaking out when he sees phantoms or anything unusual; he believes this is happening because of Yato using him against his will back in episode five. He finds himself back at the store where he tried to “borrow” a skateboard and was lectured by Hiyori. Since Hiyori isn’t around this time, Yukine decides to “borrow” the same skateboard.

As he’s riding on the skateboard outside, Yato arrives and puts his foot on it to make it stop. Yukine claims that Hiyori bought it for him. When Hiyori arrives, Yato asks her about it. After an awkward pause, Hiyori corroborates Yukine’s story.

They are interrupted by the arrival of a woman riding a lion, who attacks Yato with a whip. She’s Bishamon, a strong war god; she’s out for revenge because Yato killed one her Regalia a long time ago. Quite a bit of the episode focuses on the chase and fights between Yato and Bishamon.

Hiyori remembers Yato telling her that if something happens to him, she needs to go see Kofuku and her Regalia. When she goes to see them and explains the situation, they refuse to help at first. However, after Hiyori pleads her case, Kofuku agrees to help.

This episode has a strong focus on Yato and Yukine, and how they don’t seem to be working well together at all. At one point during the battle, Yukine asks if Yato would kill him if he screws up. After this, he also seethes to himself about the fact that Yato also has the Regalia named Nora. At the end of the episode, Yato finds himself wondering if things just aren’t going to work out between him and Yukine.

For the most part, Hiyori wasn’t a very important character in this episode. Her main purpose was to witness Bishamon’s arrival, and then to help Kofuku track down Yato after she agrees to help.

It’s made very clear by the end of the episode that we haven’t seen the last of Bishamon. At this point, I’m expecting her to serve as the main antagonist for the remainder of the episodes in the series. She was hinted at back in episode five, but we didn’t learn anything about her until this episode.

After watching episode six, I felt a little better about Noragami than I did after watching episode five. From what I’ve seen in the opening credits, I think the series has just about established everyone who makes an appearance in the credits. It’s a good thing, too, since from what I’ve seen, it appears that this is the halfway point of Noragami. I’m hoping that the series will start getting even better for its second half, and I look forward to watching episode seven in order to see whether or not I’m right about that.
