Log Horizon: Episode 19 – “Chasing After Them”

Log Horizon is an anime that tells the tale of what happens when players of the MMORPG game, Elder Tale, mysteriously find themselves actually inside the game after the 12th expansion, “Novasphere Pioneers,” is added. The main character of the series is Shiroe, and he is joined by his two companions Naotsugu and Akatsuki. As the series progresses, they are joined by other characters as they figure out how to live within the world of the game.

At the beginning of the episode, Crusty and his forces face off against the goblins battalion, and they seem to be getting the upper hand. Through the telepathy communication network, Shiroe is able to learn about how well Crusty and his forces are doing; however, he’s concerned about Choushi, where Marielle and the others from the party training are.

At Choushi, they see that there’s at least 1,000 goblins coming their way. Marielle gives them the order to go after the goblins. While they’re able to hold up against a first wave, another wave of goblins heads their way. Minori and her party decide to face off against this wave of goblins. As they fight against the goblins, a pack of dire wolves also arrives. During the battle, Minori and her party are getting worn down. Just as it seems like Tohya may lose all of his hit points while fighting against the dire wolves, Rudy jumps in takes them on. Near the end of the episode, Rudy makes a major sacrifice in order to help the others.

A few episodes back, when Isuzu tried to add Rudy to her friend list and was unable to, I had a theory as to why that was. This episode ended up proving my theory right. We learn in a flashback that Rudy had confided something to Isuzu and asked her not to tell the others.

Something else that was notable was during a scene where Naotsugu and Nyanta are talking about Minori and her party and how they have progressed. Naotsugu also mentions something about Shiroe and how he would play back when they were in the real world, and we get to see a flashback of a couple of the characters playing the game in the real world. We get to see Naotsugu clearly, and in real life, he looks rather close to his player character. The other character we see is Shiroe, but he’s in the shadows, so I couldn’t truly tell how he looks in the real world.

Because of the battles that are seen in this episode, it’s actually a bit more action-packed than a typical episode of Log Horizon. That’s not a bad thing, though. There’s also a bit in the way of “feels” near the end of the episode, especially after the battle Minori’s party has with the goblins and dire wolves.

There’s only six more episodes left in Log Horizon, and the next one will obviously continue to focus on the adventurers trying to stop the goblin threat. What I’m curious to see at this point is whether or not this plot point will take up the remainder of the series, or if any of the remaining episodes will focus on the adventurers trying to return to the real world.

After seeing the preview for episode 20, I’m definitely looking forward to watching the next episode of Log Horizon.

I take it you’re watching on CrunchyRoll but not subscribing?

I’ve seen episode 20 and it is VERY interesting. This show continues to improve, which is a neat trick this far in.

You got it. I’m watching on Crunchyroll as a free user. I wish I could afford a subscription, but it’s just not in the budget right now. 😦
