Log Horizon is an anime that tells the tale of what happens when players of the MMORPG game, Elder Tale, mysteriously find themselves actually inside the game after the 12th expansion, “Novasphere Pioneers,” is added. The main character of the series is Shiroe, and he is joined by his two companions Naotsugu and Akatsuki.
A lot of the focus of episode 18 is on Princess Lenessia and her attempt at recruiting adventurers in Akihabara to help defend the League of Freedom Cities against the goblins.
After arriving in Akihabara and taking in some of the sights, Shiroe takes Lenessia to see Karashin, the trader. Shiroe and Karashin work together to look for armor for Lenessia to wear when she addresses the adventurers in Akihabara. Shiroe wants to make sure she’ll make an impression that blows people away.
Shiroe addresses the adventurers and explains the situation, and adds that some may think there’s no need to save Eastal and that there’s nothing in it for them. However, he says there’s someone he wants them to listen to, and he has Lenessia come forward. After a small hesitation, Lenessia begins addressing the crowd. She explains that the lords haven’t decided on a course of action, and that they were planning to have the adventurers take on the job of defending their cities. She apologizes for this, and then offers an impassioned speech in which she not only asks the adventurers for their help, but says she will join them in the fight. When she finishes, there’s a pause, but then the adventurers start voicing their support for Lenessia and say they will join her in defending Eastal.
Through her efforts, Lenessia is able to convince 1,200 to join her in the fight. Crusty will lead the army, and Shiroe is serving as the strategist. By the end of the episode, the plan is underway, which includes using a steamship, the Ocypete, to help transport Crusty, Lenessia, and the first group of adventurers to their destination faster.
At the end of the episode, we see that Lenessia is having regrets about what she did. Her thoughts are interrupted by Crusty, who says she looks as if she’s dying to take it back but can’t. She tries to claim that isn’t true, but the audience knows better. I like how Crusty has been able to read her like a book since he first met her earlier in the series. Is it just me, or would they make a good couple? However, I admit to being torn on that. On the one hand, I’d like to see them become a couple. On the other, though, I’m rooting for the adventurers to be able to return to the real world. If Crusty returns to the real world, then a relationship between the two of them wouldn’t work.
While this is going on, Lenessia’s grandfather, Lord Sergiatte, visits with Michitaka and Henrietta. He explains how the lords are viewing Lenessia’s actions and that it risks splitting the league. He also says that giving the Round Table titles of nobility is now off the table, because he realizes that the Round Table and Akihabara are forces that rival Eastal in both strength and structure. He proposes that both parties make a nonaggression pact and a trade treaty, and to use that as the basis for future relations. With Crusty and Shiroe gone, Michitaka and Henrietta can’t act on the proposal, but they do seem to be interested in the idea.
I have an appreciation for Lord Sergiatte, because he’s one of the few lords who seem to be able to see reason. His proposal seems fair to me, but I’m afraid that the other lords of Eastal will find some reason to fight against the idea. I really hope that the adventurers that are going to fight the goblins will be successful and prove to the paranoid lords that they want to work with them and aren’t plotting against them.
If I have any disappointment with recent episodes, it’s the fact that Akatsuki hasn’t been involved in the story nearly as much as she was earlier on. In this episode, we see her help Lenessia into her armor, and then we see her in a short scene accompanying Shiroe as they are heading to where Shiroe’s planning to set up a headquarters for the operation. Akatsuki is an awesome character, so I hope to see her back in action soon.
I’m looking forward to watching the next episode of Log Horizon and see how Shiroe and Crusty’s plan to deal with the goblins will proceed.
